VS 5.0 Screaming like a Banshee..

Hiyas, First time posting and unfortunately its for a spot help rather than offering some.

I've just walked out of the shops, jumped in my car (VS Caprice 5.0) and started it up only to have it scream and wail in protest. On the way to the shops there was not a whimper from it, this noise seems to have come out of nowhere. I've removed all the belts 1 by 1 (aircon, power steering, alternator/water pump) and it's still making the noise as soon as the engine starts. Thinking it could be the timing chain? Anyone have any thoughts?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Could be the starter motor still in mesh with the ring gear - normallly the starter pinion retracts from the ring gear as soon as you release the starter, but it can get stuck in and still be connected to the ring gear making the starter motor rev and scream till it ....fails.
