Default Suspension Knocking when hitting a bump?

Got another one for you guys in the quest to patch my ute up. Whenever I hit a bump, (it can be any size bump, right down to a small bump like a bridge expansion gap) I get a knocking from what sounds like the rear wheels, it also seems to be coming from the left hand side. Its a bit like a "KNOCK..knocknok" noise. If I had to guess, I would have said it sounds like the shocks are screwed and its bouncing off the top of the springs, and echoing through the empty tray. I got under the back and checked what bushes I could see, but couldnt see any breakage... Am I right in thinking the shocks are buggered? also, even if you think it isnt, whats the easiest way to tell if I need new shocks under the back?

Also check your exhaust pipe hangers. Mine was recently banging in the rear over bumos and it was the exhaust hitting the panhard rod.
