Default Car uses more fuel than my old magna, dire situation!

My VR is chewin the juice. I get around 400-450 to a tank on purely highway driving with 98 octane premium and me taking it easy. No codes from the ecu, its a fully serviced car with new plugs and leads and starts and runs fine. seems a little down on torque but i used to have V8's. Ive got a chrome tip on the exhaust and it goes very sooty very fast. i cleaned the exhaust tip yesterday morning after doing the leads, did 100kms that day and i could already get soot on my fingers. If i leave it for a week it starts to go black until soon enough solid black. anyone here had this and fixed it?

    cheers guys

Magna's were horrible on fuel. So the commodore being worse is a problem.

I'd replace the o2 sensor first and check the ECU temp sensor too.

lol please mate, my old 1992 4 cylinder magna wagon with a carb used so much and it was even a manual cause i had to thrash the thing to get anywhere, engine size doesnt mean good/economy. My old 308 was the most economic car ive had cause it was so well serviced and a fresh rebuild and driven well. I know my VR is running rich i just gotta get to the bottom of it, and i though O2 sensors gave codes when they pack it in?

About 80,000k you should change them I think it is.

o2 sensor wont give out a code until it dies, it could be faulty, they have a service life of about 50,000- 80,000km for the cost of a new one ($50-$100) its worth changing, it will pay for its self in wasted fuel your using now if that is the problem, and you say there is a heavy sutt build up which would suggest running rich so that would be the 1st thing i would change then if still no different i would then look at the coolant temp sensor.

400 -450 on a tank may be OK - it depends on how you define "highway driving" = to me it's on tollways and maybe motorways...sometimes at 100kph and at other times slowed to 60kph. If this matches your definition of highway driving then I'd say you are getting average economy.
When the 4 cylinder Magnas were on the market, their main selling point was that they used less juice than Commodores and Falcons, so I agree with _R_J_K.

How much stuff do you carry around in the boot like toolboxes etc.More weight uses more fuel.I dont fill the fuel tank ,just go to half a tank, otherwise you just have to drag around a heap of extra weight in fuel, especially when just driving around town.I fitted a set of pacemaker tuned length headers and they made it a lot better on fuel (its a VS V6).Made it drop the running temp on the gauge as well, dropped about 1 mark from where it used to run at.I'm not sure if this hepled to make a difference on the fuel usage or not though. And tyre pressure, run em at 32 psi.Check the tyres maximum pressure first though. This is for the standard 15 inch chaser rim. Some alloy wheels will run at a higher pressure than the standard rims.Anyway try running them at the maximum pressure or there-abouts.

Id be looking at the oxygen sensors as stated previously. And check the air filter,if its blocked it will cause the engine to run rich.

sadly im being quite serious, my VR is good. If i fix a couple of tiny things its as good as a VR can get without going aftermarket. But the falcons are just so much more polished, ive owned one and got rid of it for this VR and i miss it every day. And i like the ford 6 MUCH more than the buick V6. more Australian and just more refined.

The 6 cylinder falcon motor is s--t.Ive replaced more ford 6 head gaskets than I care to remember.I wont do em any more .Its just a waste of time.6 months later they are back wanting it fixed again. They just seem to blow out for no reason. And it just seems to be the automatic trans ones that do it,very strange.
