i own a 1995 VS berlina and have noticed its cambers for all 4 wheels seem to be getting more angled. (if thats the right term). i dont really have a picture to explain it but say instead of the wheels being straight like this |----| they are looking more like this /----\ .tires i replaced on the rear 1 year ago are now completely bald or wire from the tire insides is visible. i thought it might have something to do with the cars IRS but its not just the rear tires doing this. anyone know what could be causing this?
Is it lowered? That would explain the rear camber.
The front camber shouldn't be that bad even if it has been lowered. Stut tops could be worn or collapsed maybe, the struts themselves could have be collapesed.
OH, that reminds me, I had a similar issue with my e30, make sure the nuts at the top of the struts are not loose.
Could be the strut towers have been damaged, a suspension place should be able to measure the distant between the 2 towers and see if it's less than factory spec.
Some pictures would be good to see the magnitude of the issue.
Front on of the front wheels and strut towers.
Might help work it out.
Good luck.
its not lowered at all stock as. ill try and get some pictures now. symbols dont really demonstrate the problem well do they? :P
ok here are the pictures. unfortunately pictures of the car don't really demonstrate how bad it is but hopefully you can get the idea from these.
front tire with wire showing
old front tire, completely eaten away
obviously because the car sits on such an angle the only part of tire that contacts the road is the outer edge. eating away the tires very quickly
get a wheel alignment as soon as you get some new tyres on it, that should fix the problem on the front, IRS rears always seem to chew tyres but you can buy a camber kit to help this.
im looking at selling the car soon and this is just one of the problems with it that i need to fix before selling it. ive got a set of its original 15s that arent chewn up to chuck back onto it for a wheel alignment. hopefully this will fix the rear problem too. but other people ive talked to have said that the rear problem will be expensive to fix.![]()
the rear camber isnt real exspensive to fix its only 2 bushes and i only paid bit over 300 for springs and camber kit so the camber kit cant me to expensive only hard part is getting the old bushes out
If You Want More Inches - Stroke It!!!
No point at all getting a wheel alignment with 15's on it if your planning to put bigger wheels straight back on it, it needs an alignment with the wheels that are going to be staying on it.
I think that car needs a front end alignment full stop. I don't have what size rims he's running on the front, that should not happen.
I was running 19's with SL's in the front and there was basically no camber wear on the front.
The rear, well, welcome to the world of Holden pre-VE IRS...![]()
i was running 18s all round but will be selling it with its original 15s. so they are the tires that will be on it when its wheel alignment gets done. it has been a while since ive driven the car but i remember it making a whirr vibrating sort of noise throughout the car when driving between 50-60kmh. i know this could be a million different things but is it possible that this was due to the way the tires were sitting on the road?
Whirring noise could be stuffed front bearings... but they shouldn't be causing front camber... You've wheels would fall off if the bearsing a re stuffed enough to cause negative camber... lol
Not sure the excess camber would cause the tyre tread to be more noticably noisy.
Best bet, take it into an alignment place, see what they have to say about the front.
Cheers
