Default what does it mean when the exhaust gas out of the tailpipe isnt constant and smooth

    hey all,

bit of a random question, but what does it mean if

when you put your hand over the tail pipe the air comes out in sorta puffs instead of a smooth airflow

from memory my old vr used to have very smooth exhaust gas coming from the tailpipe

but my current isnt as smooth

btw the car has just had a full service and has had everything done including cleaning of inlet, throttle body and maf

    cheers in advance

It all depends on duplicating when you put your hand on the exhaust - were the engine temps the same, same time of the year, morning or afternoon etc etc.
If your engine runs smooth and doesn't chew juice then it's OK. If you look for problem you will surely find one (old Chinese proverb)

    thanks for the reply hako,

well actually its all the time winter summer morning or warmed up, the air coming out doesnt come out smooth,

im just thinking it might have to do with my current high fuel consumption that ive started another thread on recently

Could be a burnt exhaust valve or two. Exchaust will puff every now and then.

Your engine is probably blocked with carbon. This is the main cause of engine problems, esp in old cars, but mechanics will never tell you (or they dont know).

Buy 3-4 cans of carby cleaner and spray inside your plenum, EGR valve and air intake. Carbon will pour out, so do it on grass. The car will be hard to start afterwards and will blow out a massive 'explosion' of carbon and crap. But it will run really smooth afterwards.

Keep cleaning it once a week for 4-6 weeks until the crap comes out clean.
