just replace ignition leads. car wont start. i can hear the injectors when i turn the key, engine craks, but wont start. I installed new leads as per diagram for a vn 304. Any help...urgent. cheers
You can narrow down the ones you might have stuffed up by using the lead lengths as a guide......
If it's not firing (which it should even with leads crossed), it probably is the coil lead. If that's OK next cab off the rank is the coil and then the ignition module...that's when you start spending $$$$
Was it running before you changed the leads?
the leads may have been on differently than the diagram not everyone puts number one on the same poll when they install the dizzy so it could be out one or 2 places if you pulled them all then used a diagram of the proper install one lead at a time is best
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong
tabbacco is still my favorite vegetable
A way to find Number one is to take the spark plug out of cylinder 1 and get someone with a spanner to turn the engine over(in the direction it runs) by the crankshaft while you stick your finger in the sparkplug hole.(Get a good seal around the hole with your finger) And while the motor is being turned over by hand ,feel for the compression stroke,it will force air past your finger,(It may take a couple of revolutions to get to the compression stroke). Then once the compression stroke is found ,slowly turn the crank (in the same direction) just enough to line up the timing marks to TDC on the harmonic balancer. Now if you remove the dizzy cap, the rotor button will be pointing to number one post on the dizzy cap.

Just for info:
Number one cylinder is front left hand side... and firing order 1..2..7..8..4..5..6..3
check thru my recent thread on doing my home service... it's got a diagram of how the leads should be laid out.
Lead number one on mine is the lead to the left of the clip that hold the dizzy cap on on the passenger side. So find the clip, and the first one anti clockwise 'should' be number 1
Check for the diagram from greenfoam here...

It depends on where the dizzy was set to when it was fitted, number 1 could be anywhere. They are usually marked where it is supposed to be but some people set them up differently.
hmmm.... ok.... but mine was the same as the images supplied by greenfoam and my holden workshop manual so i figured that's where they would be from the factory.
They usually are unless someone has removed it and set it differently when it was re installed. The dizzy body sometimes has a little groove/line marked where the cap sits on the dizzy, the rotor button and the no 1 lead on the cap should all line up with this mark. The engine has to be on TDC of the compression stroke for them to line up.And this is where no 1 should be set at.hmmm.... ok.... but mine was the same as the images supplied by greenfoam and my holden workshop manual so i figured that's where they would be from the factory.
All sorted. cars running great now. no more lag at high revs either. Thanks for the help everyone
im positive it was the lead order. I used the diagram, but started slot 1 one more over on the right. Anyhow, the original problem i had with it getting stuck and struggling at 5000 revs, has totally gone now. I think the mechanic who serviced my car last time originally put the leads in the wrong order.
Ive finally been able to test my car properly since i had the cam installed.
Bloody beautiful.!
I appreciate all the helpful hints and info from everyone.
Cheers
