I heard a rumour that in ex-cop VS's you didn't have to pull up on the shifter thingo to shift from 2nd-3rd.
a) is it true?
b) can I do it to mine?
and c) is it a simple case of hacking it up with an angle grinder?
Discuss...

Mine (BT-1) is like that - the lock/lift bit just sits there and doesnt lock - I'd say all thats missing is a rod and spring internally, remove them and you have BT1-style.
It does add a touch of danger, knocking it into reverse while cruising would be expensive.
The BT1's Ive seen including my sons VN will shift from overdrive or drive to second without lifting the lock. You still have to lift the lock to go to reverse and park.

Really, so they don't have the lift thingo at all? I thought it was normal apart from the 3-2 change
EDIT: Yeah Brett thats what I was thinking of. Have you had a look at it?

Normally it has to be lifted to go from drive to second. The police order them with the "modified shift gate" as part of the BT1 package. They can just bang em straight down into second gear from drive/overdrive and floor it.I doubt many of em would even use it.
My Berlina can change into any gear (except reverse for some reason) without lifting the lock button. The spring just eventually fell out one day or something.
i have a BT1
i can change from 2nd,3rd,drive without lifting the lock
i have to lift the lock to get into 1st or put it in N or R etc

How to do the mod was covered in an article in S***** C********* some time ago. It's basically just removing one of the steps on the shift interlock in the car. If you remove the PRNDL surround - remove the ashtray and pull it up using the hole left where the ashtray sat as a handle - you will be able to see how the shift lever interlock works.
On the 3-2 shift, the pin on the lever will stop against one of the steps on the shift interlock plate. Hit that step with a file (the SC article suggested using a grinder and covering the interior to prevent damage from the sparks), extending it to match the next blocking step (2-1), by extending the profile/arc of the shift interlock plate. Smooth it up and smear a bit of grease on it to finish.
There's a light detent at the trans. end, so you will still feel the gear position that is selected.

My BT1 has that feature and I find it handy going down the Toowoomba Range when I can flick it back to second and not touch the brakes all the way down. I find it a bit harsh for overtaking as it boots you back in the seat at under 40kph in D and will spin on wet roads.
Yep done it on all of my Vn's works a charm. Time to get the grinder out mate
