Dunno if it is a problem or this is how they run but my vs will sit just underhalf or lower on the highway just like any car should. But when in traffic or drivethrough it moves all the way up to 3/4 the fans come and cool it down. But is 3/4 to hot just because it rise fairly quicky when stopped. any help would be greatly appreciated cheers cam
A lot of people say their temp gauge on the VS sits at 3/4 .Some say its normal . Mine only sits at a 2nd-3rd mark on the guage on the highway, and sitting in traffic it goes to half way ,then the thermo fan kicks in,and drops it to a quarter again. It just keeps repeating this while sitting there idling.
when my ute is moving it will sit on 1/4 but if im stopped at lights after like a few minutes it will jump to just under half! or just above half depends on how hot of a day it is too!
It is constantly on 1/4 around town. It jumps a little higher when it is hot.
mine used to get up to 2/3 before the fan would kick in which i didn't like so i wired a switched earth wire to the relay and i just flick the fan on every time i pull up in traffic to keep it at 1/4. I find my oil stays healthier for longer.
your temp senders might be aged and not accurately measuring temp anymore.
i was getting 3/4 temps before fans came on, and simply by getting a new temp sender (for the dash guage only not the ecu one) and fans were then coming on at 1/2 mark.
Mine sits a bit below a quarter, it was running higher until i gave the air filter a quick clean.
My VS runs about quarter on cooler days on the recent warm days in vic been running half way, thats smooth driving though, with abit of putting the foot down it warms up to just over half way, most my mates Vs's seem to vary where they sit though
yeah, new temp senders (both) and air filter gets cleaned reg, I also run an 80deg thermostat. I live in qld, it is supercharched and cops a flogging so i think that's why mine runs so hot at times.
If everything else is right, it must be the guages in these cars, some work good and others read high.
I have tried everything to fix mine, new temp sender, another temp sensor, flushed & bled, radiator is not blocked anywere, there is nothing wrong with it and still went up to the second last notch from hot [city driving] , country driving it sits on half, I got another temp guage from the wreckers and that read one line lower than the other one, I have had an auto electrician check it out, it sat there outside his workshop ideling for an hour and a half but the temp never went over 105 c.
I finished up putting in a manual switch for the fan for city driving, just for peace of mind, most of my driving is in the country.
The auto electrician said a new guage is worth $175, so bugger that, the manual switch keeps me content.
Mine's exactly the same as yours Rony. When we worked in New Guinea the locals had a great saying: "you worry - you buggger-up"
since i fitted the 2 and half inch sports ehaust system and only after the oringinal finaly wore out 14 years (fitted on nov 23 last year ) and no other engine mods ,my v6 vs ute i owned since new.. nows runs a lot cooler we had some stinking hot days here in newcastle..... even leave it iding with the aircon on 15 or 20 min..... before fitting new system, the temp gauge use go up and down like a yoyo... at the moment it stays in between c and middle .. shes done about 16000kms
problem solved new radiator and shes good as gold just moves up over half and the fans come on and cool her down cheers and thanks for the feedback

What do you think of a high flow thermostate?

All you can do is try it and see if the running temp drops. What do you think of a high flow thermostate?
They sound pretty good in theory - designed to run the engine at the normal temperature so the running temp should not drop, but any rise in temperature will be slowed due to the extra coolant flow when they open. I wonder why they are not fitted to new cars?
Any new thermostat should keep the engine around its operating temp.If the old thermostat is making the engine run hot then you should notice a drop on the temp gauge once a new one is installed.

I agree Brett.....something I've noticed over 6 years is that despite keeping my cooling system in apparently perfect condition - all new hoses/heater valve/red longlife coolant/new thermostat/waterpump - I notice the temp gauge runs 1 notch higher than a few years ago and when climbing the Toowoomba range with 5 people on board and A/C on in mid-summer she gets up to 3/4 whereas before it would be 2/3rds. I also notice a rust deposit on the inside of hoses I replace but the coolant remains either bright green or red depending on what type I'm using.
Just getting old I figure.
Mine gets the same rusty looking slimy buildup inside the hoses and under the radiator cap.I always use good quality coolant for the Commodore/Toyota V6 engine but its still always there.I think this buildup coats the water jackets inside the block as it ages and causes the coolant to be less efficient at soaking the heat out of the block. The radiator tubes are probably coated in the same stuff. Also I think some VS gauges arent the best with accuracy.Mine will only go to half way then the fan cuts in and drops it to a quarter or thereabouts(when Idling). It sits around the 3rd mark when on the highway on a hot day,and then on a cool night on the highway it sits at the second mark. You say that yours goes to 3/4,and a lot of other people say a similar thing. It would be interesting to get 2 VS's that have a different operating temp "place" on the gauges, and measure some temperatures around the engine and radiator etc after a similar run.3/4 doesnt leave much room to go to the hot mark.I wonder if there was a faulty batch of temp gauge senders made,But Id be betting on the gauge being out of whack a bit.It is too common a problem to be the engine running hot or overheating.
Mine runs at about 1/3 but will creep to nearly 1/2 on a hot day.
With a/c on it sits around 1/4.
As the BCM controls low fan operation and PCM hi fan, some times the main earth point near the battery gets a little loose or corroded. This inhibits the low fan relay operation and means only the hi fan will operate at a higher engine temp of around 3/4.
mine sits just below half on a hot day but if AC is on it sits at 1/4.. used to sit 3/4's - annoyed the crap out of me coz people kept saying that was normal which it WASNT. Ended up being electrolysis
hey mate just keep driving to steam comes from under the bonnet then you know it's hot
