Hi folks,
I have a VS acclaim I'm wrecking and I need to get it out of my driveway before wifey loses it. But before I send it to the scrap heap, I'm wondering what parts members think I should keep as spares for my VS ute?
I don't have the room for salvaging the drivetrain but I would like to hang on to those bits'n'pieces that tend to fail/wear out/crack/break every so often.
Thoughts?
D.
what's the interior like, i'm after some bits for my VR. does it have intact chrome strips?
tail lights! the acclaims have clear indicators. umm and probably the seats, console...all the fuses(good for spares)
I'd look at keeping the following;
Alternator
Starter Motor
Battery?
Headlights
Brake calipers and rotors
Door handles
Door Window mechanisms
Central locking
ECU and BCM
Dash cluster
Airbags
Wheels?
Aircon compressor
Radiator
All depends on how much space you have.
thanks wortus - hadn't thought of the starter motor and compressor. the rotors are shot but i didn't think to salvage the calipers - do they tend to fail in holdens? on a related note, is it worth keeping the master cylinder?
it's really only the caliper seals and pistons that will fail but I'd keep the calipers incase one ever gets too corroded or a stripped thread. You can keep the hose attached and seal up the end and they will keep better but would need reco before use if left a while.
I'd also consider keeping the coil packs and DFI module, hand brake cables, heater core, heater tap, blower motor resistor.
Hey im in neeed of a centre console ash tray if your willing to sell??? plz cant find em any were :/
Could always try to sell parts to members if they need it dude.
Like panels and such.
What colour is the car?
plastic lip on the corner is broken, but its yours if you want it. pm me and we can arrange something.
its a dark blue (not sure what the holden lingo is) - the rear end is cactus, but the rest of it is pretty straight. i'll post it up on the classifieds forum after i pillage it. (i need 20 posts to be able to place an ad on that forum - only halfway there)
Then hurry up and post away. Haha.
Apart from already stated above;
Injectors
Rocker covers
Harmonic balancer
Globes
Plastic knobs and handles form inside
Dash Combo meter if low KM on odo, plus gauges do fail
Look for stuff on eBay that has a lot of bids or good bid prices to determine stuff to sell that is in high demand. You will probably be looking for that stuff yourself in the future and if you change car, it will sell easy.
Master cylinder is 50/50 and you can do an storage cost/replacement cost analysis as to keeping it. If it works perfect, then it is worth keeping. I know of a VN unit that lasted 18 years before it failed. Seal kit was about $70, plus my time and skills to rebuild.
Hadn't considered rocker covers - do they have problems with age?
From what I could tell on ebay, most of the parts that are in high demand are either "buy it now" new or come off limited edition/top-of-the-range models. But I did notice some demand for parts already mentioned in this thread - so thanks guys!!
I'm thinking to salvage the heater core - is it worth the pain?
With the rockers, they are made of some sort of composite material and seem to leak when they are tapped, like a screw driver point dropping onto them. Also if the engine ever has to come out, they get damaged easily. It's one of things I have had trouble with - twice in 14 years.
As for the heater core, if your keeping the same type of car long term and got the space, it could be a real saving!
A lot of these things will be cheaper in the future from wreckers, then again they become rarer. In the end you got to make a call on what you can easily store and the chance of it costing you money to get rid of if you move house.
I do intend to hang on to my ute for at least 3 years so I think I will hang on to that heater core. At the very least, it may be fun to rip into the comm's interior. Thanks for the advice lux.
