VR V6 low oil pressure now knocking

For about a week the oil light was coming on at idle but yesterday the motor started knocking while driving, trying to decide what went wrong, if the oil was too thin im hoping it was just a noisy lifter and I can get away with an oil change as when i was home in the drive way in neutral the knock is pretty noisy around 2000rpm but if you select drive and rev again to 2000rpm it quietens until idling again.
Should I try an oil change or save it for a new motor?

It might be worth trying a thicker oil,but its probably needs a rebuild.You can get the oil pressure checked.That will tell what condition the oil pump is in,and get the engine compression tested as well while your at it.But you never know, it might be a blocked oil filter or thin oil.Change them and see if it fixes it ,then go from there.
