test drove a vs today, and the auto was holding 1st gear for abit longer then usual for these cars

any ideas why this is happening?

its got 164000km on it and the oil in the trans was clean and didnt smell burnt

i dont know if supercharged ecotecs have the same shift points as the N/A ecotec in the tune, maybe you should look into that.

All the 'possibles' may count for nothing - the fact is that a 4L60E with 164000km is a prime candidate for sunshell failure - most will fail before 200K....this then requires a full reco so I would factor $2000 in for that. Unless there is proof that the auto has been recoe'd already I would count on doing that soon.
Also being supercharged would indicate the trans has worked a bit harder despite having an older owner.
I'm one of the oldest on this forum and if my car has urge I will use it.

hey hako, thanks for the reply, the gearbox had smooth shifts besides holding first for abit longer then usual... and it didnt slip at all( igave it abit hehe)

could it still be the sunshell even though the rest of it seems fine

It wont be the sunshell causing it to stay in 1st longer than 'normal' - the sunshell is the mechanical part that invariably fails in the 4L60E transmission - the car then goes into LHM and a few Ks later loses all drive. The trans will then be contaminated with steel shards from the sunshell shearing and the usual fix is a full overhaul.
It may just be caused by a faulty throttle position sensor - which this fault finding guide suggests:

If you google 4l60e, you will find plenty about this transmission. My sunshell failed at about 160,000km and the trans was overhauled with a stronger aftermarket sunshell installed.
With any secondhand car you are always taking a risk....no way around that other than trying to cover all bases.

+1 fot TPS was driving home from work last week when my car started deciding 1st gear was the gear to stay in, then after what seemed like forever it moved up to 3rd and refused to go into overdrive, I thought it was rooted.

Then the idle started running high and all over the joint and it started slamming into gears, from Park or neutral was like a bomb going off inside the trans. picked up a throttle position sensor from my mate for free, whacked it on the throttle body and the car drives well again

Yeah forgot to mention I got error code 22, (Throttle position sensor or circuit failure) none the less, something simple can cause massive issues.
