Default Urgent! VR column shift auto. start inhibitor switch?

Hi. My g.f's brother has a VR v6 wagon with column shift auto.

It suddenly developed a problem where sometimes it wouldn't start in P or N. The car primes, but will not kick over The RAA guy said that it was the inhibitor switch or something? He bridged a connection in the starter relay and it worked, but he said that switch would need to be replaced asap.

Can someone direct me as to where this switch is located, so that i can rip it out and replace it.

If anyone has any diagrams that would also help

    Much appreciated.

Its under the shifter, pull off the center cover, there is a box that sits next to the shifter, its got a shaft that sticks out that goes to a lever on the inhibitor switch.

think its 2 screws n it comes out, i got a spare but ur ages away.

doubt wrekers would want more than 20 for it

There is a how-to on fixing this, look up fixing "reverse lights" as it runs off the same switch and will or should fix your problem. They are little tabs that will bend in time and loose contact, well hopefully that is the issue. It could also be your immobiliser, check the error codes, if code 31 comes up you know it is the immobiliser.

Column shift inhibiter switch is completely different to the T bar version and lives under the car and not in the console. Instructions to adjust etc are long - pm me your email and I'll scan them for you.

FYI.... finally got round to fixing this. After laying under the car and racking my brain over the location of the inhibitor switch, i finally located it. It isn't under the car as you suggested Hako.

It's under the plastic shroud of the column shifter! I looked at my gregory's (asuming VS-VR were the same) and they aren't! Just to refresh, the car im fixing is a VR. On VS it is under the car on the side of the trans.

Well, that does make a difference! - I just looked at your ride and saw VS. Did you eventually fix it?

On VS it is under the car on the side of the trans.
My VS(floor shift) has the inhibitor switch under the centre console, next to the gear selector.

Just adding my 2 cents here. Early VS column shift autos had the inhibitor switch in the steering column, late ones had it on the side of the transmission. There is no defining break point of when this was changed.
