Default VR ute manual gearbox removal.

Fogive me if a thread on this topic has already been started. Im just preesed for time and need a short but sweet solution for my problem. I am removing the 5 speed manual from my ute to replace the clutch, i was making good time on the job until it came to the top 2 gearbox bolts. I can be buggered if i can get a hand to them from below let alone get a spanner to em. Does any body know of a preffered technique.

long extension bar, and undo the rear mount and pull the gear selector thing out and tilt the ass of the box down and you might get in there.

here this is better, pulled it out of the how-to section How to: R&R a T5 Manual Gearbox - V8

Thanks a bunch mate. Never would have thought to pull the shifter out, should give me some extra room. There was also some good tips in the thread you found. Cheers for your help.

I Have removed all 6 bolts holding the bellhousing to the block , but am still not able to separate it. Do i need to remove the starter motor as this seems to be the only thing i can see that maybe holding on. Have read the manual but it seems a bit vague in step by step removal. Thanks to the guys for the tips have progressed a bit further but still no separation.

Are the exhaust brackets, cross member and inspection cover removed?

If so, there is five bolts and 1 nut to the engine block from memory (of doing it 6 times)

Grab the back of the box an gently wiggle, being carefull the whole lot does not fall on you!

There may be too much weight on the box without cross member, this will make it hard for the shaft to slide out of the spigot bush! So support it a bit at the rear.

I have pretty much removed everything exept dust cover and starter motor. I am taking out the starter motor now, looks a bit ratty so might replace this while im at it. As far as i can tell there is only six bolts , if there is a nut im yet to find it. I get what your saying about too much weight on the rear of the box i have a trolley jack under it and will balance the load best i can. Thanks for the quick reply every little tip helps when your a first timer like myself.

Dust/Inspection cover stops it every time!

I think those manuals do expect us to be engineers, so that's why I don't use them.

Gregories/Haynes and that other mob (spanner as a logo) are making heaps of sales out of people that unwittingly trust those Desk Jockeys that created those manuals.

just make sure when you put it back in that it doesnt hang off the input shaft while in the clutch plate or you will bend the clutch plate and the clutch will forever shudder when you let it out taking off
