i understand its 4.5 litres, is this correct? and if doing an oil change after 5000ks should i bother doing the oil filter aswell?
4.3 litres with filter,I would be replacing the oil filter every time the oil is changed, they are cheap to buy anyway.I always add around 4 litres then use the dipstick to finish off topping it up.Start the engine, let it idle for a minute or two then let it sit for 5 minutes and then re-check the oil level.
so where exactly do i drain the oil from?
Underneath the engine, where the engine sump is there is a sump plug. Get a spanner/socket+ratchet and undo that. Bye bye oil.
thought so, does it need too be warmed up or cold is better?
Oil drains better when it is warm, ie thinner. I always change my filter, on the VY it costs about $10.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
Hang on!!! The oil capacity is 5.3 litres for an ecotec, says so in book and I always have to ensure that i have a bottle with some left over from the last change as a five litre bottle is not enough. Unless the earlier ecotecs had a smaller sump? But can someone confirm that last bit please.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
I'm pretty sure the oil capacity on a VS ecotech is a fair bit less than a VY. The VY's I think have a larger sump capacity to enable an increase in the service interval from 10,000km to 15,000km. That said I'm not so sure about leaving oil in for that long. I always use a new filter. I find genuine parts are usually cheaper if you find the right Holden dealer.
The book for the VS says 4.3 litres.
couldnt get the filter out, whats the trick too it?
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
If you cant get the oil filter out you can jamb a screwdriver through it and use the screwdriver to turn the filter to loosen it.(very messy). What you really need is an oil filter wrench, they are cheap to buy,get a metal circle rachet type one, they seem to work best,Ive used some strap ones and they fail.
just grabbed a tool for $8 but **** it for today, the engine bay is hot and i want to drink beer now :P
i actually did, this is my first beer in about 3 months .... must be something about being under a car on a hot day.
either way i dont drink drive. EVER
series 1 ecotec is 4.3 liters , some motors had oil consumption problems poor piston ring tension and excessive valve guide clearance. some were fixed under warranty and got new dipsticks with higher oil levels , these took 4.8 liters. i used to have a series 2 vs ecotec and it took 4.8 liters as well. i only know about vs not later ecotecs , cheers.......
wrong thread omg

Trouble is Pete, it gets worse the older you get.....it's a steep slippery slide. I spent about 10 minutes the other day cursing my remote for not unlocking then discovered I was pressing the lock button. It just ain't fair.

incorrect
ecotecs had an issues with rear main oil seals leaking and now there is even another revision to the dam thing,
when the revised rear main seal was replaced so was the sump that made away with a ribbin type seal to a gasket that was flat.
to confirm 4.5L for small sump plug bolts
4.8L for large sump plug bolts, vt had standard large sump plugs i have also seen some vs's with small and large plugs.
vs utes and statesmans should have standed large bolts from s3
just checked my book for my olympic edition vs ute and it says 4.8L
