Red face Vs commodore coil pack testing?

    Hi all,

My vs is misfiring, makes a kind of chugging sound when taking off. Have done spark plugs and leads and fuel filter, i'm now wondering if you can test the coil packs(have done it with mulimeter and has read fine)any other way. I don't really want to spend $150 replacing all 3 if i don't have to.
Also, the car is chewing heaps of fuel, could this be related to the coil packs as well, or do i have bigger problems?

    Thank you in advance

Just borrow a coil from a mate or get a second hand one from a wreckers and try it in the 3 places where yours are,see if it makes any difference when its swapped over for each one of your 3.The cylinder numbers that are on them dont matter either, the coils are all the same and can go in any of the 3 places. If yours have the cylinder numbers on them ,it means they are original coils and have probably done a lot of miles, new ones dont have the cylinder numbers on them. They do wear out though just like anything else. When I did mine I used genuine holden ones,I replaced all 3 at the same time,it made a big difference to how the engine started, ran ,got better economy and a lot smoother running.

If it's misfiring as suggested, you may have crossed the plug wires up. Before buying new coil(s) you should test them - use a multimeter to measure the resistance on each coil (remove one at a time). All 3 should have similar resistance. Also inspect carefully for cracks or high voltage tracking. If they all test OK it may be the DFI module or even the CAS. Might pay to do a codes test Checking error codes VR/VS (Revised) this may show up a fault elsewhere which may be causing your high fuel usage...maybe coolant temp sensor.

Ive seen these coils test ok with a multimeter but still cause misfiring.I got caught out like this ages ago,so now I just use a good coil to test with.

Mate to start your own thread just click on "new thread " on the top left of the main VR/VS section.Just thought Id mention that as it is your first post, saves having to dig up old posts that no one will read. And if you start a new thread of your own ,you will get more answers and help.I find the genuine holden coils are best for the average person. You can get MSD ones.MSD is a respected ignition parts company,I havent tried them on a V6 but they say they are a bit better than the original ones.Ive used MSD stuff before on 351's and 308's and always found it reliable and performs well.I always recommend that if one coil is stuffed, then you are better off replacing all three.I noticed a big difference when one of mine stuffed up.I replaced all three and the engine ran so much better, even after I had temporarily replaced the old stuffed one with a second hand one until I got three new ones.It started heaps better and was so much smoother and better on fuel.A big difference. They must slowly degrade as they get old until they finally die.

if you have good spark and stuff i would be more inclined to check to oxy sensor in the exhaust if it running rough and chewing fuel
