Wanting to swap my 304 for an LS1 engine. Iv heard i need engine mount adaptors but what about the trans? will it bolt on?
If i were you i would purchase a motor/box/harness/ecu combo.
Its a ready engine, 400hp worked ls1 complete with ECU, just wondering if it will bolt to trans?
i beleive the bolt pattern is the same as the old 304, but unsure on the output shaft.
No gearbox will not mount up you .You cant even bolt it up with the right gearbox as you have transfer the starter motor to the other side of the motor with a adapter plate from castle main knob shop and the matching aftermarket starter to suit you will need about $1800 spare just for the mounts and bell housing adapter plate and starter motor i have looked into it if you a pretty handy you might get away with it for about 12 or 13 grand bye the time you buy everything you need in the car and driving
Cheers Doug
Float like an elephant sting like a tree clubsport hits what doug does'nt see
the starter dosent have to be moved its like 5mm in the way apparently
LS1 is from a holden SS VY
Yeah we know its from a VY SS.
The point is, its not a straight forward fit.
If you are paying someone to do it, from what I have read on this forum and others, budget around $15-$20k for a car thats ready to drive away with zero problems.
I would of just worked the 304 to the nuthouse! for around 5G's.
Then put the other 10G's in the bank!
i have heard that if you move the rack over a bit it will get enough clearance for the starter to clear it, dunno if this is true or not.
calaisturbo.com has a few good threads on this swap, try and find the one where old mate puts one into his VL circuit car.
i looked into this and it seems like too much money and stuffing around for me, i'll go with yella terra's whipple blower kit instead. 10 grand = easy 400rwhp.
Iv got worked VT heads, bigger valve seats, ported and all curves sort of pointed, ment to flow 520hp also with brand new valves, dual isky race springs, pushrods and retainers etc, also got headers and cam. LS1 is local and going very cheap, just been worked to 400hp ECU is tuned engine ready to go and only $3000nz. If i work my 304 the stroker kit will cost $2000nz alone without getting it balanced then i have to get a few bits and bobs then tune it. Quotes for tuning over here are averaged out to be $1600.
Obviously im going to have to build this engine where i could buy this engine which is about the HP im after with my 304 so im just trying to find out some info to help me decide the better option.
Ok, seriously? yes, modifying a 5.0L is going to be 3x more expensive than modifying an LS1, but putting an LS1 into a VS is going to cost 8 grand AT BEST. Your cheapest option here is to sell the VS and buy a car with an LS1 already in it, then modify that. You'll save thousands.
