Mate Buying a workshop manual is the best thing to do if you want to work on your car and have not got much experience fixing cars. They explain everything step by step,(including removing the fuel tank.)Well worth it,and the first time you use it to fix something yourself, then it will have paid for itself.Gregorys are the best ones to get.
Never done it, but i could imagine 2 jacks under the tank with timbers and then undo the straps and hoses ect.... and lower the jacks with the tank.
it's actually quite dangerous and you've got to do it in a static free smoke free area and preferably out of sunlight or you could explode.
I agree with buying a manual, they outline all this including the safety precautions you need to take so you don't hurt / catch fire.
I also agree with paying someone to do it unless you're going to paint it while it's out.

Just remember not to smoke a ciggie while doing it.
I have removed many petrol tanks from cars for lpg conversions. Just make sure you drain as much out of the tank as you can before removing. You don't want the fuel spilling everywhere.
I removed the tank from my VR wagon about 1 month ago. Used 1 jack in the middle for support. Only undid the rear of the straps. They were bloody tight, lucky I have a rattle gun
I used plain water with a cap of detergent to wash out the tank. After leaving it full of water overnight, I was then able to cut the tank with an angle grinder to fix the fuel return line. The tank was then welded back up and given another quick rinse and a leak test before re-fitting.![]()
Shit of a job, Iv'e changed Normal tanks to drop tanks in VN's, Easy once you know what your doing, drive it until it's emptyish, undo the bolts, vent hoses (if i remember correct) fuel sender and lines. should be a walk in the park after that?
