The surface rust is nothing, just sand it and paint it with gal paint. If it has pitting, then it is OK with up to 75% (I think) original thickness.
Just take it to a gas installer, first pages of the Yellow pages L-Z, book it in near you and it can be left there or they can take the tank out and you can keep driving on petrol and return a few days later to get it finished. Your call on the saving of LPG. Say $200 over the next 10 years is good value, unless you change your car every time you get moody!
You can remove it yourself, but thats not legal and it will not comply to the current LPG plate fitted to your vehicle and the defect remains. It might cost $200 for an LPG dude to certify the LPG has been removed correctly!
