Hey guys,
I'll be getting an exhaust in a few weeks and I don't know much about exhausts and I wanted some help with finding one that'll do what I want. I know 'redback' and 'lukey' exhausts are the pick, but I want to phone up a shop and tell them 'exactly' what I'm looking for so I know I won't waste me money.
What I want my car to sound like
- low burble when it's idling
- doesn't have to be loud in low revs but a nice burble would still be nice
- when I put my foot down I want it too roar
- minimal drown
- highway driving preferred quiet
As far as looks I want it to be twin pipes and maybe dumpers if it makes it sound better?
If people have an example of their car idling and a drive-by that's be amazing help too ( i know there is already a thread for that but I couldn't find a car with just the exhaust system and no custom extractors) and the more detail on the type of exhaust so when I phone them up I will know what I'll be getting.
Thank you all so much for any help you can give![]()
Redback 2.5 with centre muffler and no resi is what you need.
a redback cat-back system will give you pretty much what you are looking for, however putting on extractors will give it that slightly better note. high-flow cat isnt important unless your cat is buggered. not to contradict what bowtie said, i would start with the proper system (ie muffler and resi) and see how you like that. having no resi is illegal and it will drone heaps if your car is auto.
Oh sorry forgot to mention, most exhaust places will do whatever tip you are after (twin, single, dumpers etc etc) and it should cost around 300-400. if you get extractors too you won't get much change out of a grand.
thanks guys! Got me quote today for the catback system for only $260 excluding tip ($20 to $100 the guy said). Mad a thread about it in the performance section of the forums. Is it really illegal to not have a resi? cos the guy i spoke to said itll sound better and he would do it...
DONT get a resi get the 2.5" catback with just one muffler...having a resinator will create next to no difference in terms of an exhaust note...i went down that route so i know. and its legal if it doesnt exceed the dB limit, which they shouldnt theyre not that loud
Yeh i was thinking of getting the catback with the straight through centre muffler and possibley taking off the resi and just having a straight pipe? that what you mean bro? cos i've heard some vids on youtube like the one below (he is on this forum) and it sounds really nice
YouTube - VT manual take off, soft
You should just get it with the resi on, and if you decide later on its not loud enough you can get it changed to a hotdog or just taken off so at least you have it.
In order for the exhaust system to be legal, it needs to not exceed a dB limit AND the car needs to have the same amount of mufflers as the stock system (2).
Also don't forget that without a resi it will drone.
There's a big write-up in the v6 section on the street commodores forum regarding exhaust systems which is worth a read...

i have pacemakers with twin high flow cats and a 2"5 redback with muffler and resi and shes quiet on the freeway and gives a nice note when i punch it i would go with the resi it will not drone as much as the straight pipe. as i have heard the differences between the two on my car.
im sure the exhaust joint your going to would let you drive it around the block to listen to it and c if you like it if not im sure they would help you out
