hi guys, hope someone can help , im runing out of ideas. recently bought 96 vs that had a blown head gasket. instead of fixing it i thought i would get a motor from wreckers. had nothing but problems. motor idles really rough and it chuggs at the exhaust pipe. if you increase revs it gets better but still has a miss. i have replaced spark plugs, plug leads, cleaned throtle body, swapped all three coils from another car that runs fine, replaced fuel filter but still it runs like a bag of s**t. any ideas would be greatly appreciated. cheers
Check you cat and your O2 sensors
Soooooo many posibilities from what you ahve described, have you done an error code check?
did you remove the sensors from the throttle body when you cleaned it? I know the problem allready existsed beforehand but I fixed a rough idle with exhaust chugging on deceleration by replacing the throttle position sensor. Just dont bother with a second hand one, as 4 months later I had major issues with the auto, turned out that the TPS was on the way out againa nd had made it seem like the auto was dead.
There is a procedure in the haynes and gregorys for checking the condition of the sensors, i'm not suggesting you blindly spend money.
If you don't have error codes I'd suggest a compression test. Low compression in a cylinder will cause chugging/missing/rough idle and revving it will often alleviate it because as you spin it faster there is less time for it to lose compression before it fires.
thanks for the replies , i dont get any error codes from computer only no 12. leads are on right order checked a few times in case i stuffed it. when i cleaned throttle body left tps on but removed and cleaned the iac valve. think its time to do a compression test .dont really want to change motor again.
Try swapping the injectors and the fuel pressure regulator from the old motor - it's not unusual for the fuel lines to get water dirt in them when removed from a wreck. This could cause your problem (along with quite a few others as Dannyboy DS suggests.
