    Default oil detergent

I recently serviced my VSII ecotec less than 2weeks ago,and i added some oil detergent to the oil, which is meant to "restore compression, remove deposits...etc"

I noticed that the oil level's now closer to the add level on the dipstick rather than the full level where i left it 2 weeks ago.

would that stuff increase oil consumption... it's made of hydrocarbons which are meant to burn off in the engine right?

(oil's 20w50 Valvoline XLD premium which i've been using for 80,000kms without any trouble, and a Ryco filter)

I think these magic cures increase compression by removing and carbon deposits on the piston rings allowing them to seal better....same deal with valve stems, lifters etc. However, they probably also remove the carbon ring at the top of the bore which tends to help seal the piston when at TDC. Older members will recall being told not to remove this ring of carbon when de-carbonising as it will increase oil consumption.
So maybe you lose on one hand and gain on the other. At least oil is cheap.
    Good Luck.

What was the product? There are oil flushes which you are supposed to add to the old oil, let the car idle for 20 minutes, then do the oil change like you usually would. Most of these flushes are not supposed to be driven around with.

oh no, these detergents are no good for older engines..it cleans away carbon that is sealing piston to bore, more than likely oil is now entering the cylinder and burning away...its like running most modern diesel engine oils, its ok in an engine from new but contains detergent/cleaning agents and remove that carbon

if it's running like a diesel or burning excessive amounts of oil, wouldn't it handle differently or puff smoke?

jenna's (my VS) handling great, very responsive and smooth... no signs of smoke or anything.

the instructions said to add to the oil and that's it. didn't say anything about flushing it out

I'd try and identify the product again just to be on the safe side. It's 10 to 1 you haven't done any damage and even the carbon seal at the top of the bore soon builds up again.
