Ok, I brought a memcal off of ebay, said it was for a VR/VS V8, tuned to compliment exhaust, CAI etc. I have a 5 litre VR, with decent exhaust, extractors etc. However when I put the new chip in, it won't fire up.I get the usual lights in the dash, fuel pump priming etc. but it just won't fire. Go back to standard memcal, starts fine. put in the new one, no starting.
Have checked for error codes and get 12 (no errors), So is the memcal bad even though I am not getting code 51? or is there something else that is coming into play here?

might sound silly but did you disconnect the battery befor you installed the memcal?
pulled the ecu out entirely and let sit for a couple of minutes

Will be a problem with the security for some reason. Either the memcal is a VS one, or your cars bcm doesn't work. VS memcals can't run n a VR so I'd say that's your issue since you say the memcal is for VR/S. But probably I shouldn't be helping since it doesn't sound like my stuff up :P
Your first mistake was buying a memcal off ebay. Bad, Bad idea.
Hope you didn't pay alot for it.
It may cost more (bout a grand) but a decent tune on a dyno will yeild far greater results than an ebay chip will.
personally i would never use one unless i knew it was coming from a reputable source (like some of the guys on here, like the one above me).
Just don't forget that 95% of the ones I do are over ebay, and there's plenty of other guys that do good mail order tunes on ebay too including some good ls1 stuff, I'm even sure the one he's got would have been ok aside from a error in getting the car wrong but everyone can make a mistake
ummm, ok I think it came out of a VS, just assumed it wouldn't matter seeing as they're the same motor aren't they? Can I get it tuned to run in the VR?

The memcal in the VR/S have a security code that has to match the car. So if it's a VS one it's not going to match the VR bcm and it won't let the injectors run. Did you get it from a guy that makes them or is it one that's been made allready. If it was specially for your car then just get the guy to reburn it or if it was a VS one for sale well then someones going to have to reburn it with a VR tune
It was aready made. Suppose I will have to get it redone to suit mineatleast I have a spare lol

Can a VR 5.0 memcal be programmed to run a VS 5.0? Ive got a 94 VR memcal sitting here that i would like to get tuned for a 96 VS
Lol, no it wasn't greenfoam (nicefrog) as far as I know he is flatout atm which is why i didn't hit him up to do mine![]()

Yeah it goes like this
VN V6 = 128k
VP V6 = 128K
VN V8 = 128k
VP V8 = 128K
-------------- All these can be used to make VN or VP 5 litre memcals.
VR V6 manual = 256k
VR V8 manual = 256k
VS V8 manual = 256k
--------------------- These can be used to make V8 VR/S manual tunes or VN/P tunes.
VR V6 Auto = 512k
VR V8 Auto = 512k
VS V8 Auto = 512k
--------------------- These can be use to make any tune for any of the VN-VS 5 litres
VS V6 = 1meg
VT V6 = 1meg
VT V8 = 1meg
Super 6 = 1meg
--------------- These are all the same and can be used on anything that runs this 1 meg memcal but it's a different shape/type so cant go into the earlier cars.
You can also solder a 512k eprom in the earlier memcals and then use them in a VR/S but soldering is bad for my health and contaminates all my stuff with lead which I don't like
