The age old debate over whether you have a comfortable soft ride which is great for touring but not for handling or performance or something a bit harder and lower and with a better stance and stability. And do low profile wider tyres change the ride characteristics from one to the other greatly?
This new VR Statesman of mine has 245/45's on 16 inch rims and rides a bit harsh to be honest and I was wondering if it was just the low profile tyres making this occur? The car has a tow pull so obviously it might have been used for towing and had beefier suspension fitted to it over the years but it hasn't been lowered much if anything.
I am well past the age where I need a super handling performance car but I must admit on smoothish roads this car handles like a dream and hugs the road brilliantly. It's just on rough surfaces it tends to be a little skittish and harsh riding and you feel every bump thru the steering wheel.
So I am considering getting higher profile tyres maybe or changing the suspension, depending of course on which would work the best to even out the gulf between the harsh but direct ride it has now and a smoother softer more touring ride which would be more comfortable but not necessarily better.
I like my ride to have stiffer suspension. I hate it when the car has body roll. It sucks.
It's pretty much personal prefrence really. If you like it soft and easy then go for it. If you like it hard and rough then keep it that way.
