    Default from buick to ecotec

i've repeatedly read that the buick is torquier than the ecotec, and the VN-VRs are quicker than the VS, is this true?

if so, why would holden make it's newer car slower and less torquey?

i drive a VSII ecotec, and while very happy with it, was just wondering.

i know that overall torque and power are higher in the ecotec, but does the buick out do it and if so why?

i'd be interested to know that too, ive heard the ecotecs are more fuel efficent anyone with an eco tec want to tell me how many kms they get out of a tank?

i like the buick engines but the ecotecs are enticing me too.

Use the search button, it's been covered heaps. Every Ecotec vs. Buick thread just ends up with people saying that they "think" or "feel" that one is better than the other. Every answer is completely subjective as there is no control to compare against.

To paraphrase though, the Ecotec delivered (off the top of my head) a 5% cut in fuel usage and a 13% or 17% (I can't really remember) increase in power over the Buick, that's why Holden used them.

There will be no definitive answer to this though, racing a stock VR and stock VS of this age against each other will prove nothing (well to me anyway), every engine has been treated differently.

My personal preference is the Ecotec simply because they have more bolt-on bits and pieces, and the apparent improvements over the Buick. Speed off the line on a stock engine isn't really a concern for me.

i get around 10-12l/100km around town and 8-10l/100km on highway (110-120km/h)
that's with the aircon off.. with it on it eats an extra 1-3L/100kms!!!

i was wondering because i was looking at manifold spacers for the ecotec and the ad said "make it have the low end punch of the buick"... now either the buick has more low end or the manifold spacer's not a good thing

If you took a VS that had been well maintained (serviced regulary etc) and a VP that had not been looked after, of course one is going to have more torque than another.

Heaps of people here will tell you how well their VP / VS etc runs, but it's all a much of a muchness.

The most accurate way to finding out would have been to take a brand new VP and a brand new VS off the showroom floor in complete stock form and running them down at a track or something. But i highly doubt that would be possible nowadays.

I have owned A Vp series 2 v6 and driven ecotechs and I found that my vp would out perform an ecotech easily unmodded and an l67(and so it should) would shit on both of them with ease

so as performance would go of the line and in aceleration it would go

    L67>buick > ecotech

I have the specs of as tested (not holden specs) v6 commodores from vn through to vt, and the fastest v6 commodore from 0-100 is the seriesI VN executive. If I remember correctly the VN exec is also the fastest over the quarter mile.

I will have a hunt around at home and see if i can find it.

Aside from the specs though, I am of the opinion that the seriesI definatly had alot of low down punch, but really lacked any top end whatsoever.

The seriesII in my wagon seemed to be a step above the seriesI, in terms of mid range grunt, and the missus' VX just seems to want to rev forever.

In a head to head dash nowdays I think the Ecotec would beat the seriesI 9 times out of 10 due to the seriesI wheelspinning and the eco just taking off.........

    Thats my 2 cents.

ive never let the car get under 3/4 so im unsure of the range but when u fill it takes max 30 ltrs and thats really pushing it so that tells me that i still have another 50 ltrs in the tankand at 3/4 he estimated distance to empty is normaly 400 to 500 kays from 3/4 and i recantly did a trip from canberra to brisbane and it only cost me $80

so your saying you can get 2000km per tank?

That comes to 4l per 100kms.

The new fiesta econetic gets 3.6l per 100kms and thats the most fuel efficient car in Aus. How is it that a 94 model 3.6l V6 is on par with a 2010 model 1.6l 4cyl TD?

A standard commodore fuel tank is what 65 litres? If this guy has a 80 litre tank on a larger heavier car, I think he would only be getting 800k's at the MOST!!!!

who has ever heard of a V6 Commodore gettin 2000 k's out of a tank? it's impossible!

Brand new the VR and VS V6's got around 7-8 litres per 100 k's on the highway and 11.5 litres per 100 k's city driving. And statesman V6's were a tad higher. The VS was probably a bit better on fuel than the VR a la ecotec engine but is wasnt a very big difference, maybe half a litre or thereabouts per 100 k's. You do the maths.
