    Unhappy Airbag/Dash Problem?? Help plz

    Hey guys and girls,

I've got a problem with a VS Commodore. The "airbag cover" on the passenger side dash where the airbag pops out has started to lift up but the airbag hasn't inflated and it's all fine underneath.

What i want to know is how can i get the airbag cover to stay down without stopping the airbag from inflating?
I'm worried that if i glue the airbag cover that the airbag wont be able to deploy/inflate when needed?
Can someone please help me out?

I'll get some pictures up tomorrow when the light is clearer.

    Thanks

Pretty sure mine has done the same. The cover has just warped from the heat and direct sunlight. I'm curious for an answer to this one too.

yeah i know, it's giving me the shits because the interior is prefect besides this one thing.
I've asked some trimmers but they don't want to know about it (Typical *sigh*)

EVERY VS passenger side airbag cover will lift when left in the sun. There is nothing you can do except replace it., which is not cheap. I don't think Holden even make the cover anymore, and even if you could, it will do it again.

The airbag will not inflate, the cover is simply a piece of trim.

I would rather have a warped cover than a dodgily inflating air bag.

The only real way to fix your passager airbag lifting up, is to change it. Eg dash cover has to come out

i understand that the airbag cover can be removed/disconnected from the actual airbag module, but if i buy a new one and have to glue it back on again i'm still gonna have the same problem because the airbag may not inflate properly
I've thought about using sikaflex, liquidnails and almost every glue i could think of but there's still the problem of wether it will inflate properly or not once the new cover is glued down??

Does anyone know a trimmer or somewhere that would be able to fix it? or anywhere where i can by a new cover??

    thanks

there not glued on the cover should just pull off and the new cover should just push on in its place. Dont glue your cover down that will defo effect the air bag if it ever does go off.

    Mine pisses me off too.

I thought about gluing it but as westbad said it will effect the bag.
I thought about a trimmers and getting them to cover it when I have the dash re-done and that will prolly effect how the bag goes off.
I'm hoping fingers crossed either A. I'll get over it or B. the trimmer might be able to do something. lol.

You would need to remove the cover from the air bag unit, repair it then refit.
Its kind of like a lid for the airbag.

    Dash out from memory.

I dont see why you wont tell us? The idea of this forum is to share knowledge with others? I have the same problem and would like to fix it, but if you wanna be like that about it, I find it rather selfish.

It's not that I don't want to tell how but as you can appreciate it's most likely not legal. As you can see it's as professional a job as you could expect. Certainly done by a professional who wouldn't give me an invoice..........enough info?

Mate i can sell you a passenger airbag module, but that isn't going to fix your problem. The only real way to fix the passenger airbag from lifting up, is to take the dash out and unbolt the airbag cover (pretty sure, you can buy them brand new from holden) and replacing it with a new one. See below is from a statesman but you get the idea.

Yea already tryed that ages ago. It made it sit a bit lower, but it still sticks up too much

BT1355 - So you think i could just unbolt the dash and buy a new airbag cover from Holden?

Yes thats all it is, just take the dash out and replace the airbag cover. The way i see it, do it once and once ONLY. It will last another so many years before it pops out again

glue it - The airbag has enough strength to rip a child's head off it's shoulders if they are too close to the module when it inflates, and you're worried about a bit of liquid nails?

I made some enquiries with holden and they told me 2 things

1./ the cover is no longer available
2./ the airbag itself is also no longer available

The only way to keeping these things fairly flat is to have a dash mat that can keep them covered yet cut so that they can allow the bag to inflate, but I guess that's a bit late now ?

I have a look here now and then fo ran answer to this common problem and pleased to report we finally got ours fixed. Our air conditioning conked out and to get it fixed the repairer had to take out the whole dashboard. He went to a couple of wreckers and managed to get a new dash with the cover intact. Cost $1000 (OUCH!!) to get the air conditioner fixed plus about $100 for the new dash and airbag. We make sure we put up a sun cover on the front window now and hopefully the cover will stay put. I guess it's probably very lucky for us he was able to get the dash without the cover lifted.
What we didn't think to get him to look for was a new button to work the side mirrors and install the CD player we have bought all at the same time. When we told him we had the CD he said he would have installed it. Great bloke!!!!
