filters are filters its the quality of the fuel and tank condition and how often you change them , drive your car around on low fuel often enough and crap build up will increase , moisture build up inside the tank can accelerate surface rust which will flake off and clog the filter quicker .

Take a fuel sample from your tank in a clean glass bottle and allow it to sit for awhile you will see any debris or moisture will settle to the bottom , there are fuel conditioners available from marine shops which can help with moisture break down , for a daily driven car moisture build up in the tank isnt that much of a problem its when the fuel tank sits idle for sometime with low fuel levels . check your tank breathers and vents and seals .

fuel sample can be taken in many ways , removing fuel line from rail supply or return line will do , disconnect fuel filter , jiggle hose down the filler neck , breather lines are located behind the tin plate in the drivers rear wheel arch and also run to the charcoal canister under the bonnet , check your cap seal for condition , check the vacum lines from the engine to the charcoal canister for signs of cracking or blockages .

If you use E10 fuel, the ethanol in the fuel absorbs any moisture in the tank. Back a few years, if we had water in the fuel we would add about 1/2 a litre of methylated spirits to the tank....the metho absorbed the water and mixed it with the fuel. Ethanol is more or less the same animal as metho.

I want to change fuel filter on VS 6/96. Never done myself before. Hoping someone could guide me - talk me through please...
Reason being - the cars keeps stopping. Sometimes won't start. I wait for 5 mins and then it goes. Have changed the computer. Crank angle sensor maybe needs doing. Any thoughts ?

Any other ideas re this stopping please?

To change the fuel filter let the engine idle ,and whilst its idling remove the fuel pump relay from the fuse box under the bonnet. The engine will then stall ,then wind it over for another 5 seconds or so.This procedure drops the fuel line pressure so it doesnt spray into your eyes or what not when the filter is removed. Then install the new filter, install the relay again and start the engine, check for any leaks around the new filter.Too easy. What you have said points to the Crank Angle Sensor (CAS).Replace it.Also do en error check on the engine management system.Heres a link to show you how to do this. Checking error codes VR/VS (Revised) The top post in this link explains how to do this test, and if you scroll down near the bottom of the page theres some excellent pictures which shows you how to do it.
