Default vs s1 5l ute air con prob

hi guys i have a s1 5l ute had air con regassed about 12 months ago. have noticed its working a bit intermittely(bad speller) after driving around for a while it seems that it doesn't blow very cold air. i think it only happens when the car gets to running temp. the compressor is spinning fine when the aircon is engaged so i believe there is no leak and there still is gas in the unit. there is a very hot pipe on the drivers side floor that flows into the unit. i have noticed a burning rubber smell which may be coming through the vents but the belt does not seem to be melted at all. any commom probs that people know about

The hot pipe you describe is the brass pipe for the heater core that runs hot water from the engine in to blow warm air. If this pipe is still hot even though the dial is set to cold, you have one of two problems.

First, your heater tap is rooted, or second, the vacuum line that controls the heater tap is rooted.

This is why your air con isnt blowing very cold air, because its blowing through a red hot heater core first. The burning rubber smell will be related to this heater core being so friggen hot under the dash all the time. I've had this same problem before.

Buy a replacement heater tap (piece of piss) and see how you go.

In addition the Vee-ard's excellent advice above, I'd also suggest that it may just be the adjustment of the temperature dial which operates a vacuum switch which then turns the heater tap off.
If you look in the area where the hot pipe is located, you will see a bowden wire cable coming from the temp dial - this operates a white bellcrank which presses against a black plastic button (vacuum switch).
What happens is that the cable detaches from the white bellcrank which means it cannot operate the vacuum switch to turn the hot water off. It can either be reattached and adjusted or wired shut.
Post back if you have any problems with this or need instructions on how to wire shut the heater tap.
    Good Luck.
