you will need a puller and 3 suitable length, (about 2-3 inches long), 1/4 UNF bolts. These bolts screw into the holes around the balancer to connect the puller.

you can normally get them off by hand if you wobble it from side to side and pull it will come off, much like how you get a steering wheel off.

The Gregorys manual says the V6 engine crankshaft pulley bolt tightens from 270-325 Nm.You will need a tension or torque wrench to get it tightened to the right specs.

Having just taken a couple off this saturday, I can tell you that you will most probably need a pulley remover. The one on my mates car needed the pulley remover to get it off, wasn't going to budge by hand. One car at the wrecker the balancer came off by hand, and another needed the pulley remover.
There is a shaft seal behind the balancer (its blue), might pay to replace it, might not. And yeah, to get it done up to 300 odd Nm might need to take it to a mechanic, most torque wrenches you would find in the back shed will only go upto about 200Nm if you're lucky. Another mate borrowed one from work, goes upto 1000Nm, and its like 2m long

thanks yeh i might have to.. also one last question.. this might sound stupid. but as i said before im not much of a handy man of any sort... just wondering, my friend has a rattle gun and he said it has a maximum torque of 310nm... doe that me we can just use that instead of a tension wrench..

sorry again if that sounds stupid.. but i havent been able to speak to my friend much today

just do it up super mofo tight it will be fine. i did mine up with a ratchet and a very heavy hammer without even holding the crank. shes done over 1000km of driving and hard driving on boost at that and hasnt gone anywhere and its the loose fitting vn balancer that doesnt need a puller to pull it off the crank. vp onwards should be a real snug fit will need the puller

damn i was hopeing i wouldent have to buy the puller

ahhwell i guess i have to now, but yeh il just do what you said and bolt it on real tight.. i have the rattle gun so a quick snap of that and it should be all good

and yeah if you car has lasted 1000kms of hard driving on boost, im sure it will hold then, it on gas and i barely ever thrash it

thank you everyone for your help, ill let use know how it goes

    Check this link: Harmonic balancer
Make sure you get the correct harmonic balancer for your car - VS1 is different to VS2. Double check the CAS hasn't been impacted by the HB as well. Good Luck.

2nd puller is the one you want but you will need to buy the right size bolts they never come with the right ones for the commodore

Thats the wrong type for the commodores, the harmonic balancers are two piece, with outer and inner rings and rubber in between. If you pull on the outer piece it usually stuffs the HB where the 2 pieces join.It probably doesnt matter if the HB is being replaced, but if you want to use it again Id be using the proper tool for the job,the second type of puller with 1/4 UNF bolts that screw into the HB.These pullers are cheap as to buy,Ive used mine heaps of times ,when I bought it I though it would be something that I would only use once.

Might be an idea to replace the CAS while the balancer is off. Save on headaches later on.
