Hi all, i have a 96 VS exec which once upon a time looked like this
(rails crushed about 3/4's of a foot in about 1 inch from the motor JUST chipping the idler pulley) anyways i eventually fixed it by welding on a second set of rails which as most of you know is known as a "cut and shut". Assembled all the other bits on plus adding alot more things whilst my car was in peices.(ss kit, CAI blah blahblah exhaust, system, respray, tint, lowered, rims just your usual stuff etc etc)
it now looks like this:
yeh it looks immaculate but problems KEEP arising ei. just had to cut and change the heater core. (bare in mind it has only done a genuine 131XXX thou km's with books)
the question is, should i sell? iv been told different things but from alot of my mates who work in smash repair shops say flog the cut and shut off asap and buy a 'straight' vs.
bare in mind i could only get prob 6k for my car which it owes me ALOT more because of the smash etc.
so sell?
or keep working on it to eventually get it like this (rims painted black, thin white walls and lower):

It really depends on your financial situation, if you have the time and money to put into it then keep going, you have come this far!
But then cars have problems no matter what, smashed or not, that's the joys of having a carYou sell this, your only going to be buying someone elses problems in the end.
you wouldnt get anywhere near the price u want if you were to sell it genuinly.. and if u sell it to someone without them knowing it is a 'cut and shut' off you can get into big trouble, or so ive heard.
i would be surprised if you could get 6k for that, very surprised. and are you planning to tell a potential buyer about the cut and shut job? 90% of people wouldn't buy it because of that, and i think bxhd is right as well, you are (or should be) required by law to tell them.
in regards to should you sell it or not, i don't know why you're asking us. if you want to keep the car, keep the car. if you want to sell the car, sell the car. no one on this forum can tell you what you want to do. it's your car and your money, do what you want, not what other people tell you.
yeah.. im sorta in a pickle atm because i bought an ex-write off, off a mate, we both had no idea till i was trying to sell it and someone ran a check, thought i was being dodgey and said it was a write off once.. which it was. but not a cut and shut, just bent strut, new drivers door, head light and front panel... he bought it off the dealer and they didnt tell him it had been through VIV. so im not sure wat we're gonna do about it. i have decided to keep it, cuz if i sell it, i have to tell the possible buyer and its not worth nearly as much as it would be if it wasnt crashed. so im pretty sure the dealer can get into big trouble for that.. not too sure tho.
so yeah u have to be careful and i rekn u would be very lucky to get 2k for it mate.
hmmm. Theoretically it is a cut and shut, but put it this way, you couldn't tell it was even if you looked at the rails with a magnifine glass.. thats why my dad keeps saying dont worry keep it its still alright its the same as a car that hasnt been smashed blah blah blah.. It was never recorded as a write off to any company e.g vic roads etc etc it could EASILY pass a road worthy so its going to be damn tempting not to say anything ay
they are bringing in a new law so that dealers MUST tell you if a vehicle was a repairable write off, however for private sales i'm not sure. i don't know if this law is already in effect, but if not it definitely will be soon. bxhd you probably don't have a very good leg to stand on - very unfortunate.
as you said fkford, your car is not a repairable write off as you did all the work yourself etc, and at the end of the day it's your decision, but it's dodgy as all hell and quite unfair to an unsuspecting buyer. depends on your conscience. i wouldn't do it.
and yes 6k is un-crashed vs ss territory![]()
guess so.. I just dont think its really necessary for me to tell the buyer if i do sell it unless they ask. Dont know people im just really confused everyone is telling me different.. Dad says keep it (very experienced with cars) but best mates from a smash repair say flog it off asap cut and shuts will never be the same car before you crashed it.. ever. just trying to get as many opinions so i can weigh up what im going to do better
yeah thats wat i gathered.. so im keeping it and gonna butcher it. saving up for an LS2 wreck and gonna convert it and just keep it. it have no resale value so may as well 'customise it'
well thats my silver lining anyway hahaha.
and fkford, why would u even bother pouring money into a car like this unless u were gonna keep it for ages or be massively dodgey?!
i wouldnt sell it, so unfair to other buyer, unless they know wat they are getting themselves into.
yeh i get you. I get guilt trips bad to. Its just things always are going wrong with this car non stop its a lemon since the crash. Before the crash it was reliable good car. So in one sense i am stupid not to get rid of it but in the other sense selling it to some poor kid whos going to cop it is a bit hard.. but then again who sells there car and tells the potential buyer bad things about it?
lol i pour money into it because i cant help buying a good deal.. like the other day i bought Lukey extractors for 90$ including a high flow cat and Y peice.. i mean who WOULDNT buy that? thats how my car began lol plus theres no labour because i just do it myself.. and yes i have been bitten by the power bug
lols yeah. wellllll i dont know wat else to say except, its a sucky place to be in. i know first hand, as being the buyer of one. and i have had a fair few problems that it should really have for its age (VZ)..
but yeah.. goodluck with ur decision i spose.
I'd have no regrets either keeping the car or selling it - caveat emptor...let the buyer beware.
If you know exactly how the car was repaired then you will know it's weak points, if any.
Properly done it should be no worries - remember even brand new cars have a warranty to cover faults!
There are thousands of cars on the road that have been "cut and shut" with no problems....members of this forum are probably driving them right now and are unaware of it.
So, for what my opinion's worth I say do whatever feels good.
ps...I love anything cheap and have been caught a few times as a sucker but there is a certain adrenalin rush about a bargain....especially if it's a bit dodgy!
Good Luck.
not a cut and shut as such. a write off.. not that bad tho. lol dw.
ouch... now i no why you said you wouldn't sell a car like mine..
ahhh yup.. sorry im not very good at wording my thoughts, it makes sense in my head tho![]()
isn't that dbarnes car?
ohh man i WAS deanb123... sorry didnt realise u hadnt clicked on
haha all good mate. We still have to organise a time to meet up or something. I never see you driving around. I see the lime green S pac quite a bit...head always hanging out the window checking out my car, me doing the same haha.
I reckon you should keep your car man, when more serious mechanical issues start arising then I would think about it...but for the moment, just look after it I guess...unless you want something ultra reliable and able to be modded.
