Hey guys,
Got a '93 VR Executive and I think the ignition barrell is starting to play up my problem is,
Starting the car - turn the key to the ON position then turn it to start the car - car starts
So far so good
Then as I let go of the key instead of it smoothly clicking back to the ON position it either gets stuck or needs me to push it back.
I tried using my spare key and it works okay first time but it hasn't solved the problem.
Does this sound like the barrell is on its way out?
It's hard to say whether it is the barrel or the ignition switch. I tend to think it's the switch.
MY RIDE
I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.
the fault will be the return spring on the tail shaft of the barrel,, it mite be on its way out, if it continues it could eventually snap the tail shaft an witch ever position the ignition switch is in it will be stuck there.

i have done 2 in te last month, turs out it was the ignition lock housing on both, needless to say it also got a new barrell and tumblers and key readers.....ignition switch was fine on both
it rarely is the switch but in some cases it is. i personally would be looking at getting the ignition barrel replaced

Hmm interesting, barrels aren't to expensive just gotta find the time to do it - but better doing it now then before the key gets bloody stuck !
Where abouts is the switch located? Near the barrell?
the key barrel tail shaft inserts into the switch an when you turn the key it turns the switch. If pics are needed of a barrel i have a new one sitting here,

Yeah a photo of what the barrell looks like once outside the car would be good - thanks mate!
Ok this is the ignition barrel, this one hasn been made to a key yet.
1. In the first pic you can see the key in the core, the core is what holds all the wafers an springs, when the key is inserted all the wafers get pulled in so that the none a sticking out an allows the core to turn inside the barrel, the core is also a common part that fails in these ignitions,, the spacers between the wafers collapse an cause the wafers to jam, signs of this are key jammed in ignition or the key wont go into ignition.
2. Is all the parts that you get when you buy a new ignition, you get wafers an springs, core, barrel and the core retainer and steering lock.
3. In this packet i have the steering lock and core retainer pieces.
4. This is the tail i mentioned earlier, this is the common cause of a jammed ignition what happens is this breaks an a piece stays in the ignition switch an the core continues to turn when the key is inserted but nothing happens.
5. These are the wafers an springs,, these work with the cuts in your key to allign properly and allow the core to turn.
Im thinking bout making a how to thread with more detailed pics on how to actually assemble one of these ignitions, you can buy them from Holden in this ready assemble kit. Its been a while since i brought one iv had mine for a while, but im thinking around the 80ish dollar mark maybe 100.
Hope this helps for now
Keep an eye out for my how to. (that is if no one has already made one)
