I was wondering... do new, larger rims offer any benefits beyond looks?
more expensive, less durable tyres aren't very appealing
not really, less tyre/side wall means less give over bumps, harsher ride and more expensive.
a good set of rims can really improve its look and appeal, but all superficial (sp)
that's what I thought...
I've seen commodores lowered and having massive, very lightly built rims with tiny amounts of tyre on them..
someone told me to do that to mine saying it would go well with my tint and give it 'street cred'.
lol that sounds like nonsense... paying more for more flimsy, less durable wheels and tyres
at the end of the day, it all comes down to personal choice. i would love a set of 18s but for now my 17s do me fine
i remember back 10years ago with my XE i wanted 17s, coz they were just out looked at em but they where way too expensive, an uncle had 17s on his statesman and the ride was shithouse! i opted for 16s
i drive my VS on dirt roads and grass etc..
i won't be putting on big rims any time soon, lol for that price i'd get rockers or cam
big bling bling rims gets lots of attention from the boys in blue too and your insurance company may have something to add if you make a claim after a accident and you may find yourself footing the repair bill for your car and the other car/s you have damaged .
While the lower tyre profile on a larger rim makes for a harsher ride, it should also result in better cornering but with the trade off.
I've still got 16's on mine and have had for years.
Yeah, they don't look pimp but there aren't very many rattles in my car and I don't need to wear a kidney belt either.
compare the prices of tyres from 16 17 18 19 20 and the quality of what you are buying
eg : 235 45 17 yokohama cdrive (nla) $175 versus nexen $99 , my prices when i worked in the tyre game not retail , most would go the nexen's based on price alone
