just wondering if air bags have a use by date , someone said to me that the vs are a old car now and that the air bag probably wouldnt even go off in a accident ?
anyone else ever heard of this ??![]()
Airbags are deployed by a computer. As long as the computer is ok then it should work.
As for the physical mechanism, if there was something wrong then you will get an error on the dashboard.
isn't it a chemical reaction that causes the gases to expand so rapidly? a.k.a an explosion.
It is possible for the chemical components to become contaminated, but that would be very unlikely, for that to occur it would need to have been tampered with or sold faulty.
Just my opinion on the matter anyway.
I highly doubt that they have a use by date, or else they would all have to be called in to have new ones fitted after so many years. This would be a major safety issue and would undoubtedly be made common public knowledge.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
I know theres a manufacture date for the airbag,it can be read with a Tech 1 scantool on VR/VS.Theres no mention of a use by date. Also shown is the SRS software version.

I wouldn't think they have a date.
Air bags that are over ten years old still seem to fire without fault.
If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?
when they were first relesed they said airbags have a life spain of 10 years, but that has since been revised and now it states if the check airbage light is on there is a foult and needs repairs.
so if the check air bag light is on get it fixed if not no need to worry about it
