Hey im new to forums, well.. being a registerd user anyway, lol i've used them in the past for info but i cant really find out whats wrong with me ute... its a Ecotac Manual 95' VS ute and while im driving to and from work it occasionaly dies and starts to choke and splutter, losing power and applying a bit of throttle doesnt do anything really...
any help would be greatly appreciated! cheers![]()
Hi,firstly try checking for any error codes. This link will show you how to do this.If you scroll down a little way through the posts in this link, there is some excellent pictures to show you how as well.Checking error codes VR/VS (Revised) Let us know if any error codes show up.
yeah i did just before, comes up code 12... then it went to code 35. Idle Air Control... would that do this to me ute?
It could be a vacuum leak somewhere or a faulty IAC valve.Check all the vacuum lines around the engine, theres a vacuum reserve tank under the front left guard. It looks like a black plastic ball.It has a vac line going to it,check it.And also the purge cannister near the radiator, check the hoses(vac lines) going to it.You can disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes to clear the error code, see if it comes back again after a drive.Another good sign of a vacuum leak is the heater position controls going to or staying on the feet position regardless of the position selected.Has the fuel filter been changed recently,it might be nearly blocked causing the splutter,or a dirty air filter. Also plugs and leads can cause similar problems.Ive found most spark plug leads only last about 12 months or so due to the high voltages they carry on these newer (EFI) vehicles. They start to break down under the load after a while..If the above shows up nothing ,then check out the coils, try a known good one in place of each of your 3.Ive seen these coils test ok on a multimeter and still cause problems, misfiring, running crook etc.

oh ok thanks mate, the heater works fine.. ill check the vac lines tmora. how do i see if the IAC valve is ok?
The wiring plug that goes to the IAC.Remove it and there is 4 contacts in where the IAC wiring plug was removed .View the IAC valve with the wiring connector clip at the top and the contacts are left to right,A,B,C,D.Measure the resistance between contacts A and B,and then C and D .Renew the IAC if the resistance is not 40-80 ohms.Check there is no continuity between contacts A and D.
Sorry. Its a bit hard to explain,I hope you get what I mean.
nah mate i understand that pretty well actually! thanks heaps for your help!... all i gotta do now is get round to doing it all lol
No worries.Let us know how you get on with it.Cheers.
finally found out what was wrong with me ute, the bloody spark plug leads, or lead i should say. number one lead had a crack in the rubber and it was sparking on the side of my extractors!
Always pays to replace plugs and leads regularly, especially these days with the high ignition voltages these EFI engines run.Years ago with points setups a set of leads would last for years.
