hey guys, out of no were today my left strut started making a creaking noise it sounds like dry rubber rubbing against metal and then about an hour later they were both doing it, im 95% sure its coming from the top rubber in the struts, the one the spring sits in. any ideas how to fix it? i really cant afford an arm and a leg to get it fixed as im having a kid soon, the car still drives fine its just extremely annoying
all help really appreciated, and no offence but i would really only like advice from people this has happend to so i know how to fix it i dont want to be pulling a million different things apart for nothing
cheers

you sure its coming from the top mounts mate? you can get a creeking noise coming from your sway bar links if there worn or if you have nolathan bushes that have dried out..? when turning as this moves the sway bar up and down.
If its the top mounts then i would think the only fix would be new strut top bearings.
If you are sure its the strut top makin the noise you can but the top mounts for about $30 i think i payed
More than likely it's the top strut bearings and mounts from what you are describing.
its funny you guys say bearings, when i jacked the car up i found a bearing ball in the bottom of the strut were the springs sits and im like what the hell wered this come from, not knowing there was bearings in the top but now i know there is it looks like ive found the problem, can someone give me a quick run down on how to change em? please lol

jack car up, wheel off, Take the strut out (2 bolts at bottom, 6 at top) get spring compressor, compress spring, undo big nut on top of strut, take bearing plate out, put new one in, nut back on, let spring compressor out put strut back in, wheel on, let jack down, crack can open and drink..![]()
and that has to be the best DYI guide ever xD especially the last instruction =] thanks guys have the same noise assumed was the rubber but wasnt 100% sure seen so many different replys but after seeing my mates VS strut put a dent in the bonnet over that $30 rubber im changing mine cheers
in case you end up doing this yourself, its easier to undo the big top nut while the strut is still bolted in the car.
I think you will find its easier once the strut is out of the car and the spring compressors have been fitted and are holding the spring tension off the top of the strut mount.Ive heard of lots of people doing it the way you mentioned ,and they have ended up rounding off the small bolt that you hold to stop the strut from turning when you are trying to undo the large bolt at the top, as theres too much tension on it to undo it..Also the workshop manuals say to do it the way I mention.Ive followed these instructions a few times now when changing springs or struts, and have never had trouble with any of them. You will need to get a spring compressor to do the job properly, supercheap etc has them fairly cheap.A holden or gregorys brand workshop manual is also a must have for doing your own work. You can be assured the work is safe and all done properly then.

i agree that taking the spring tension off would help, so in that case i would suggest compressing the spring a little while still in the car, i found it nearly impossible to undo the top nut with the strut out of the car as it was done up very tight and it was too hard to try and hold the strut still with the amount of force needed to undo the nut.
each to their own i suppose.
