    Default 30 Litre's = 180km's

    hey guys/gals

my vs is only getting 180km/s off 30L of 98 fuel. Is that around normal?
Most people average around 13.9L to 100k around town. If that's the case shouldn't I atleast be reaching 250km?

There arent any fault codes. The plugs, air filter, fuel pump, oil & oil filter, leads have all been replaced recently, and I also had a bit of a throttle spray. The o2 sensors where replaced with known good 2nd hand ones for trouble shooting purpose's, to rule try and rule them out.

There is however a light smell of fuel after driving sometimes. Could it be a leak in the hose, if so where would I find that?
Is there anything else it could be?

The price of fuel is killing me, and the VS is worse on fuel economy than a 1970's model
    V8 on LPG.

There could be a leak mate, either check the lines that run under the car yourself or have a mechanic do it,
there is a thread going at the moment with tips to improve fuel economcy have a read over that.

    Cheers.

Try using normal unleaded fuel instead of premium - the VS is designed for 91 octane. That will save you at least 10%.
The check for any fuel leaks in the engine compartment, the best way is to do it at night with a bright torch - remove the engine cover, start the engine and let it idle - use the torch to closely check the fuel lines, pressure regulator, rail and the injectors. If you do it in daylight, the fuel evaporates before you see it but at night with a torch it seems to be more visible. Keep well away from the fanbelt!

There is certainly an issue here, my 5ltr does better than that (30ltrs = 300kms on av)

    Any fuel smells?

Try using normal unleaded fuel instead of premium - the VS is designed for 91 octane.
You should find it will get better fuel economy from higher octane fuel, people dont realise that the engine management can change the timing to suit the higher octane fuel, which increases power and has better efficiency which gets better fuel economy. The engine makes more power so uses less throttle, so fuel is saved there as well,I notice that I only have to put my foot down a bit to take off when using 98 octane fuel.On the 91 rubbish you have to open it up heaps to get the same take off speed,so more is wasted there also.Even on the highway at 100km/h.The throttle is only slightly cracked open with 98 octane. On the 91 stuff its opened up heaps more, this is especially noticeable when going up hill. The octane number(91)recommended for these engines is just the minimum octane to be used.I have done my own tests and found that I save money in the long run from using the high octane fuel, and theres definitely less fuel used for a given distance when using the 98 stuff.

there is vapour lines from the fuel tank to the fillup hole, you can unscrew a plate in the wheel arch to get access to it, mine were all split and decayed so any fuel vapour was simply disapearing into the atmosphere rather than staying the system, new hoses got rid of the smell and gave .5ltr better fuel econ over a tank.

If it's wasting that much fuel and o2's are ok then either there's a leak or your injectors are leaking

The manufacturer of the Commodore VS recommends 91 octane ....and also says:

"High octane unleaded petrol (Premium etc) may be used, but is not required by your car"

I tried 98 octane but found absolutely no difference....but maybe that's just my car. To verify any claims, proper independent testing has to be carried out.

On a side note, a mate of mine who worked for Gilbarco said that what people buy as 98 octane ain't always 98....it could be anything from 98 down to 91 and unless it was analysed in a certified laboratory no one would know the difference.

the guy who owned a couple of the local bp servos down in ballina used to put normal unleaded in the premium tanks, tee'd it up with the truck drivers, no one knew any different....pissed alot of people off seeing as they were paying the extra 10c a ltire for what they thought was 98

my 5.0ltr gets 220-260kms to 40 liters of fuel around town (country town, no heavy traffic) this is the 3rd 5.0ltr i have had and everyone has been the same on fuel.
All 3 ive owned have been fully serviced with new o2 sensors etc..
I cant seem to get any more than that around town.
