Default Engine light stays on for about 9 seconds at start up

hey guys, yesterday when i started my v6 vs up the engine light stayed on for about 9 seconds and also the motor got hot really quick, i checked my coolant level and it was rather low so i topped it up and the engine doesnt get so hot but the light still stays on for 9 seconds then goes off when i start the motor..... is it a serious issue?? cheers

sounds like you need a new MAT (manifold air temp sensor) sensor, or it has a bad connection, there is a way to test it if you have a multimeter and know how to use it

More than likely if it was working before you was working under there ;-) Have a look around for loose wires not sure where it is on the v6 tho

Well ive take n the little "snorkel" bit out that sits in front of the airbox and also had this dodgy lookn resistor type thing put on the sensor, it was like a piggy back system, anyways i took it off and didnt reset the ecu a few days b4 the light started showing up, so ive reset the ecu yesterday and the light went away but now its showing up again.... ergh.

Go to this link--- Checking error codes VR/VS (Revised) --- If you go into this link the very first post explains how to do the error check on the ECU,(the vehicles engine management computer),and if you scroll down near the bottom of the thread, theres some excellent pictures that also shows you how to do the test .Its so easy anyone can do it.These codes show if the different parts of the engine management system,(sensors etc), have any faults.Let us know how you go.

Did you let the test go for a couple of minutes as it will flash code 12 three times before any error codes are displayed. Also code 12 will be displayed continuously if there are no error codes logged.
