    Question Steering Question.

I've done a seach, and found answers ranging from wheel bearings, steering rack, shitty power steering fluid and too much pressure in the lines.

Problem is: Whirring while turning, more noticable at low speed and shuddering whilst turning. More so turning left than right.

This problem came up today, right after I fitted new inlet manifold gaskets and valley gaskets. Before this, It made no noise what so ever. I checked the fluid and it was brown and frothy so I'm going to change that and see how it goes, but could it be something a bit worse since it appeared straight after I did the gaskets?

Also, I was told to use auto trans fluid in the power steering its the same if not better? I'm not really sure if I believe the person that told me this....

    Cheers,
    Paul

Auto trans fluid is fine for the power steering.Dexron 111 is whats recommended for these systems. The same as whats used in the auto trans on commodores. The whirring sound can be caused by the bush in the steering shaft where it goes thgrough the firewall into the car.I just spray some WD40 up in there from the engine bay side up into the bush and it stops the noise. Its a fairly common problem, and can sound like the power steering pump is stuffed.Mine made a whirring, moaning ,groaning sort of sound when the steering wheel was turned.I got told to replace the pump and the rack, then I read on here about the noisey dry bush and I sprayed it with WD and the noise stopped.2 different places told me it was the pump or rack making the noise.

If the fluid is brown and frothy, I'd say you will be either replacing/overhauling the pump and/or rack pretty soon. The colour indicates it's been overheated badly and/or had engine oil added (this happens often!). It should be pink with no frothing. I hope I'm wrong.

I'll have a look at it, but I think the whirring is coming from somewhere other than the bush on the firewall. Thanks!

****. lol. Anything I could have done it make this happen all of a sudden by just taking the inlet manifold off? I checked all the fluid and oil in January and it was all fine..

hopefully your system is just low, from memory power steering racks are about $350-400 recond. if the whirring sound changes as you accelerate out of a corner then i would say its your pump. also if it is on its way out dont turn the wheels whilst the car is running and not moving and dont hold it at full lock it just tears the crap out of them and i see it all the time
