Hi guys I have VS waggon Auto and my back ground is an Electrician.
From my experience of pulling half the dash apart a while back trying to find the speed resistors for the Air Con fan (in the end I got the good advice here) I have decided to check in here before I start to fix my new problem.
From searching here the name of my problem switch is an "inhibitor switch"
Every now and then it gave trouble starting I thought at first it was the key but I have found I can turn the key to start and hold it there (the red flashing security light goes out) and if I push the Auto gear stick a little harder forward it starts so it looks like I need to adjust the inhibitor switch.
My question is can I access the switch from inside the cabin or is it in a funny location underneath (I hope not as my back is a bit touchy at the moment) and is it just a simple adjustment?
On another matter the clamp you squeeze to change gear doesn't spring back down. I guess the spring is crudded up, Is this just an easy job to spray some DWF into to fix?
Thanks in advance for any replys
Maybe I'm not making myself clear, the switch I'm talking about is the Park position switch. Also when I'm in Neutral I have to move the stick a little to engage the switch so that I can start.
Here is a link that shows you how to remove the centre console - the inhibiter switch is under there. In the "how-to" section of this forum there is an article on repairing the switch....otherwise it's $40 for a new one. Good Luck,
Stereo Install/Removal (VN - VS)
Thanks hako I will check it out.
Anyone following this thread if you remove the ashtray you can see the switch alongside the gear lever and there is no adjustment on the switch I read in my searches of someone slotting the switch with a small round file and while that might have fixed my problem I wanted it to be reliable so I bought a new switch.
Now I'm searching to see if I can remove the gear knob while I have it all apart because the spring that latches the gear lever in what ever gear it is in is permanently compressed (the one that springs down the latch that you operate when you change gears) so the gear lever could be accidently bumped into another gear. I found this thread Removing Gear Lever Knob
and mattman says
I tried but it doesn't want to move.
Further to the above I opened up the old switch and it had copper wipers on brass contacts and the copper wipers were worn so it's just as well I replaced it and not filed the holes elongated.
