Hi, im looking into an anti theft device to put on my car, no im not talking about central locking or car alarms, im talking about a device that can prevent hot wiring and any other way to start a car and drive off. iv'e heard of powerlock which makes it impossible to hot wire a car, but i would like to know of any others and from people who have them.

Taking out any relay is totally useless! A theif can easily carry a relay since they are basically similar if they intend to steal any commodore from the VN all the way up to say the VS.

The best way is to slow the bastards down!
BTW, I have a very neat way of achieving this, comprising of an hand held 'item' that propels these little 9mm round thingies at great speed, but lets not go there!

On my last commodore, I rewired underneath the engine fuse box and added another two relays so that main power to the injector rails was dissabled until turned on by either a hidden switch inside the car, or better still as in my case, I had to turn both the cruise control AND parking lights on first.

Both had to be turned on otherwise the car simply could not be started. By the time theives stuffed around cranking the engine around and around trying to figure it all out it was daylight again But I'm sure there are many more ways to achieve a similar result.

At the end of the day if they want it they 'will' find a way to take it even if it means towing it away, so the only way is to make it as hard as possible for them, but if it does go just make sure its fully insured.

BTW, in the early 90's I wrote a rather stinging article in the SMH as to how simple it would be for car manufacturers to make it impossible for a car to be started.

Basicaly it involved encription security within the EFI computer itself, but my main point was that car manufacturers make much more money from selling spare parts, and therefore not in their interest to provide any such security.

Car manufacturers simply do the minimum required as mandated by any government legislation at the time or enough to fool the average joe blow [and car magazine's etc] that the vehicle is safe.

i was about to say the same, had my vl stolen 5 times until i done the padlock trick, works

also with the vr and vs they put the imobiliser in it, with the metal part on the black key, but all you have to do is leave your reds on for an hour and it bypasses it, as i bought a vs from the auctions that had been stolen and recovered with no key and had to do this trick, holden arnt very smart really

Best coin i ever spent was $60 at the auto elec wired it so the cigarette leghter had to be pushed in when you turned the key to kick over the car, the way he wired it unless you knew the car want moving

yeah have heard of systems like this. wouldnt be too hard with a relay and a bit of wiring, but its a smart idea

how about an inline tap on your fuel line underneath? basically you could reach underneath turn tap so it stops fuel lol

Just use the deadlock facility when parking overnight or somewhere that's know for theft. Once it's deadlocked the doors cannot be opened from outside or inside....and it's free and already fitted.

yeah but once they get it to a garage, out of sight, they can then drill the locks out and problem solved.

The idea of prevention of theft is visible deterrents.

If a thief wants something bad enough, they'll get it.

Simple things like steering locks, flashing lights etc.etc. this stops the petty thefts looking for a cheap thrill. Kids walking past cars looking for something to drive. I can hotwire a VN/VP in less than 30 seconds, not an issue. They are a very easy car to steal, i know, i have 2 of them. The idea of using visual deterrants is the kid walks past and says "oh, now i have to negotiate a steering lock too, what if i get caught? not worth it" and then they move on to the next car which doesn't have a big ass lock on it.

Kill switches stop a theif from taking the car. The worst part about just relying on this is that your still gonna get a window broken before they relise they cant take it...

Alarms are good so long as they are loud, i mean really loud...loud enough to stop them working. No one cares if an alarm goes off unless its in their ear at 140db. ie. wire the siren in the cabin, not the engine bay!

So you need to stop the criminal in a few place:

1. As they look through the window for items to steal:
Easy, dont leave ANYTHING out. ID's, cameras, money anything! If they cant see it, there is no guarntee its there and they wont want to take the risk of getting caught for nothing.

2. As they look in thinkning about whether they can steal it or not:
Again, big locks, chains, ropes, visual deterrents.. anything which will make them think twice about how easy it is to pinch. Out of two cars, one with a big ass chain wrapped around the steering wheel and one without, which would you attempt to steal? Flashing lights are good here too! (even if they dont do anything, how do they know?)

3. As they sit in the car trying to steal it: Again, locks are good here! Immobolisers, kill switches, anything that slows them down. its the simple things which really slow people down. Even if you replace a few fuses with tampered ones (look working but dont) it will take them ages to get it going. Try to wire all kill switches in secretly, dont tap into the wires just after the barrel

4. As they back a tow truck to your car: Engageing brakes is good here, make it so it cant be taken out of gear, make it hard for them to roll it away...

In the end, they will probably just torch your car for being a douche and trying to protect it but at least they had to waste the fuel they were going to sniff later... (even though they probably stole your fuel from your tank TO burn your car...)

This is not the case - once you deadlock the car, it cannot be opened from the inside or outside no matter how many windows you smash. All door latches are locked and cannot be used until unlocked. There is a warning in the owners handbook to never deadlock the car with persons inside as they cannot open the doors....and neither can anyone outside.
Smashing a window only gets you in the car through the window - only way out is also through the window.

I know it does not OPEN the door, but it lets you get in.

id have to say invest in a good car imobilizers and car alarm and a kill switch also very good idea is to remove the battery terminal from the battery either the plus or minus.
