check voltage output when running should be around 14v, If its lower will prob just be a case of replacing the brushes on the reg in the back of the alternator. You can check the brushes by pulling the reg out to see how worn they are.
You can buy a replacement reg for around $50 or you can buy the brushes and solder them on to your current reg for $5
I concur with Westbad. I have had to replace the regulator on mine - a lot cheaper than the standard $350 swap from an autoelectric. Also, check your main connection to the alternator - it tends to corrode and cause voltage problems.
exactly the same thing happend to my vt 5ltr i thought it was the battery so i replaced it it was fine for about 2 days then BANG happend again lol, turned out to be the alternator, couldnt hurt to change it anyway
doin skids for the kids and doughnuts for the grown ups
Most likely alternator, when battery light comes on means voltage too low im not sure if it displays when its to high, as westbad said anything between 13-14v is normal anything under 12v will light up. Just pull apart ur alternator and check if the brushes are stuck sometimes one gets stuck and doesnt make a good contact
