    Default Rebuilding Ecotec

    hey all,
looking for a project to do - im on curfew for another 3 weeks, so i thought it would be a good idea to buy myself an ecotec and build it up

Just wondering how hard it actually is to do? and what tools would be needed?

was looking at just putting in a stroker kit 4.2L or putting in forged internals.

at the least a lumpy cam

    why are you on curfew...??
the 1st thing your going to need it a workshop manual... i would go for the max ellery manual if your doing a full engine rebuild, there a lot more in-depth that the Gregory's and are for the more advanced amateur mechanic

the ecotech is an excellnt choice for "doing up" just depends on how much doshie you have the 4.2 kits are generally worthwhile but forgind ALL internals is only necsacerry if going for positive intake preasures e.g. turbo or supercharge as the standard ecotec compresssion ratio is very low;.

try ebay for ideas there is ecotech vt kits sold for 1000 or so that are VERY effective rec buying a kit from a retailer as it takes out the guess work then the only manual spec's you need is head bolt tension. also recommoned mace engineering's rolloer rocker upgrade 1.9:1 as this part set eliminates all of the ecotech noisy chain faults afeter cam upgrade ... well worth researching if you get my drift

    yeh thanks for that guys,
im more of a fan of the boosted or lumpy cammed ls1 these days,
but i wouldnt wanna pull one apart and then **** it up lol.

so i think ecotec would be a good starting point

and im not on curfew for any driving offences, just in the wrong place at the wrong time kinda thing.

if its the first engine youve built i wouldnt even think of wasting $5000 on stroker parts to only kill them from miss assembly

i have rebuilt motors, pumps etc at work.

might try and find a standard rebuild kit and go from there

maybe you could get an ecotec and rebuild BEFORE pulling old engine out works for the not confident and you can spend more time doing it!~

    cheers for that moff man,
and for the machining - i will be able to do it all myself, quite good on the lathe and mills. going to finish my cert 3 in mechanical engineering shortly.

recieved my cash for tools last week (have allready bought all which my work wants me to which cost $650) so still have $150 left of that, and can claim all these tools on tax which is a bonus of course

the PRICE in parts for a forged bottom end and rebuilt head's no extra's is at the moment in brisbane 3000 to 4,500 but this is an echange from a reputable builder..... if it costs them that much will most certainly be less minus labour????? obviously a lot harder but cheaper and MORE FUN
