hey guys
im having trouble changing the idler pulley on my vr v6 commodore. i can get the fan belt off but then i cant undo the bolt that holds the idler pulley on. any help would be great.
cheers
Are you aware that it is left hand thread? To get the belt off, put a spanner or socket on the centre bolt of the pulley and turn it hard anti-clockwise and this will loosen the belt so that it can be removed. Then when the belt is off turn the centr bolt clockwise to undo it. Draw a diagram of how the belt runs so you won't have a problem replacing it.

I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.
so after i take the belt off and the idler pulley arm goes back into its normal position. i turn the bolt clockwise and it should come off?
Thats exactly it.
cheers guys.
It's a peice of cake, I picked up a Idler Pulley (Tensioner Pulley) for $34.50.
Before you do anything take note of what way the belt goes through the different pulleys!
Then rotate the bolt on the pulley anti-clockwise so that the pulley moves up. Hold it up and remove belt (prob a good time to check if your belt has cracks in it, if so replace). Let the pulley go back down to its original position and then undo the bolt clockwise (this will allow you to take pulley off, bolt is on good so put some arm into it!). Once pulley is off replace with new one and then anti-clockwise will do bolt back up, once bolt is done up tight as you can, rotate bolt anti-clockwise so pulley moves up, put belt back on.

. Once pulley is off replace with new one and then **anti-clockwise**(did you mean clockwise here) will do bolt back up, once bolt is done up tight as you can, rotate bolt anti-clockwise so pulley moves up, put belt back on.[/QUOTE]
does this method apply to both idlers and the tensioner???
Only the tensioner pulley has a left hand thread. The two idler pulley bolts are just normal right hand threads.I put anti seizing compound on the pulley bolt threads as I had one of the idler pulley bolts shear off when undoing it as it was corroded into the pulley mount which also broke when the bolt sheared off.I had to get another pulley mount from holden,$60.They dont need locktite.
so your saying just put some of this anti seaizing compound on the bolt before i put it back in so if i wanna do it again it wont fck up??
Yeah,I found moisture had got in behind the idler pulley mount and had corroded the bolt to the mount. So I used a sealant behind the pulley mount to stop moisture from getting in there, and I also put the anti seizing compound on the idler pulley bolt threads, so next time (hopefully in a few years time) when it has to be removed again ,it wont have the bolt corroded onto the pulley mount and will come out easily instead of snapping off.
righto might aswell grab some new bolts while im at it...need a better spanner lol!!!!..cheers mate!
