vr not starting

I've been having problems starting my calais over the last couple of weeks, but haven't actually driven the car since last week. All the ignition lights wrk but when I try and crank the motor there is no response. The remote central locking isn't working so I asked around and was told that the battery in the remote might be flat and that could be the cause, but after buying a new remote this morning i couldn't program the new remote because the security system wasn't reseting (the security LED wasn't flashing) after I jumped into the drivers seat and manually locked the door from the inside. I can't actually recall seeing the LED flashing when the problem started and I'm ust wondering if it is at all possible that a fault in the alarm system or immobiliser is the problem? Any help would be appreciated.
