Ever since i bought my car its been a pig on fuel. most of the time ill get 250kms out of a tank fuel tank of fuel and theres proberly 5 - 6 litres in the tank left thats with not even taking the car over 2500 rom .Done the obvious and looked for leaks and theres none. So the list starts had the car on the scan tool oxy sensors are working fine and so it the cts, fuel pressure has been tested and is good so that rules out the pressure reg. Pulled the injectors out and had them on the flow tester spray patterns are fine and had the under pressure for 4 hours and non of them even started to seep. so im running out of options any one had this problem and fixed it. Cheers cam
Sounds like you have covered more than the basics.
Is the CTS reading correctly when compared to a thermometer?
Correct heat range thermostat fitted?
Cleaned AFM? Works OK?
What about other engine mechanicals such as compression test or maybe cam timing? (drawing a long bow here!)
FYI I get 400km out of my 6cly wag (68lit tank, I think???) before the light comes on.
Im assuming yours is a V6?
If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?
Yeh its a v6 and a wagon. CTS is reading perfect and yes has a 91 degree thermostat in it. Air to fuel ratios are perfect via the scan tool. Got me stumped.
longshot here, but something that may be making matters worse is a blocked cat/exhaust??

How many KM has the engine done and how is it's compression etc? Also check the air cleaner, air, the sensor behind the air box, temp sensor in air box and oxygen sensor.
Have you had the exhaust gas analysed to see if it's running rich or looked at the colour of the spark plugs?
I usually get about 500ks from my VS wagon although its a manual with extractors and mostly hwy K's....
I'd be looking to find a good mechanic to look at it, could be a needle in a haystack trying to find the reason.
I would start by checking the AIR FILTER. It's the most common cause of high fuel consumption.
Since you clearly have access to a scan tool, what is the short term and long term fuel trims for bank 1 & 2. You could have a leak in the car's intake system. This would cause a normal reading at the o2 sensor as the computer will be constantly richening the mixture to cater for the unmetered air.
Another factor which is often overlooked is the driver of the car. If you are hard on and off the accelerator all the time, you'll get poor fuel economy even if the car is perfect.
What are the plugs like?
At 250kms to a tank you would think they would be like soot.
If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?
you may get that type of consumption if you are driving around heavy traffic all the time e.g city..
stop droolin
^^^were talking nearly 30lit/100km here. Seems awfully high, even for city driving.
If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?
Airfilter is new and the plugs prob only done 1500ks and there already black and sooty. compression test might be the next thing.
Check this thread:
Code 76 + bad fuel economy = dead o2 sensor?
yeh oxy sensors are fine via the scan tool still havent had time to do a compression test on the car
Brakes arent dragging at all? They only have to drag slightly to increase fuel consumption.
I have heard of oxy-sensors coming up fine in the code but being rooted, maybe it wouldn't hurt to change it anyway?
checked for external fuel leaks from the tank or carbon canister lines ? could your tank be getting milked overnight ?
yeh the scan tool has the graph and there working perfectly, no fuel leaks and the cars in the garage locked up so i cant see how someones stealing my fuel. i will put the car up an see if the brakes are dragging
