I bought an old VS Statesman because I liked the comfort and quiet ride and for the last three years it has been great. My original exhaust system finally packed it in (where the pipes enter the mufflers rusted) and my local Muffler specialist replaced the lot.
Now I have a resonance go through the whole car around 1500rpm then dissapears around 2000rpm. The problem is my car cruises 60kmph and 100kmph at 1500rpm and it even bothers my kids with their iPod's jammed in their ears.
I went back to complain and he says it is normal and OK - It is noisier than the 15 year old muffler it replaced before the pipes rusted off.
I have done a little research regarding different types of mufflers and I think he has used flow through absorption mufflers and the ones he replaced were Diffusion Mufflers.
Am I right in thinking this and does anyone know a good place to get an absorption muffler on the southside of Brisbane?
If he replaced both withflow through mufflers and I replace the back muffler will it make a difference?
I can't go back because he has already dismissed my "Whinge"
i'd go back again, try get a refund even if you have to leave the place with no exhaust
100kms @ 1500rpm?
That like amazing isn't it? Fuel economy wise!

You can wrap the muffler with either fibreglass or asbestos to cancel out the resonance - or attach sound deadening material to the body directly above the muffler(s). The problem can also be made worse if the muffler mounts are made from hard non-compliant rubber.
if you cant work out the muffler problem and have to live with it, buy a sound deadening mat that fits under your carpet. They work a treat

Hi ethann
Without pushing it I cruise in 4th auto gear at 100kpm around 1500rpm. The trip computer says i am getting 8.6ltr/100kms
Thanks for the response everyone - I think the best solution is to get the right muffler and I need to know the right type. As I said above, I think it is a Difusion muffler I need but don't know for sure. If I go to most places they are going to say that their mufflers are the best - That is how I got my noisy %$##@*& in the first place - I assumed a Muffler Specialist would know the right muffler to use. I think he has a special deal going with recycled Baked Bean Cans.
Take your complaint to his head office if he has one , if your not happy with the sound then you have every right to complain ( Ex Midas employee ) they should rework your exhaust change the mufflers to another type or brand if necessary , keep in mind you my be asked to pay for any extra cost of the mufflers if you wish to change from mild to stainless steel , labour should be on them .
just a question.
but would you not have had a triple muffler setup.
two in the middle and one on the tail pipe. this could be the reason your exhaust sounds different if he has only used two.
i reckon your best bet would be to either find another factory exhaust in good condition. or b go to someone who knows what they are doing and are willing to listen to your complaint and fix it for you.
Did you pay for it with a credit card ?
Last resort but if they won't help, lodge a charge back claim with your card provider. That might get their attention.
