Moving Battery?

Hey guys,

I've looked through the ffs search, and not much relating to VS's have come up so I thought I would ask here to see what people knew.
Sorry if it seems like a stupid question.

I plan on moving (and replacing to something bigger and better) my battery to my boot, as I am doing a custom audio installation, I also want to upgrade the power leads to 0 gauge between the alternator and the battery.

If I am to move the battery to the boot, am I able to move the fuse box? If so, how far? To the boot? Or will this mean i need to rewire the fuse cables up? What other power upgrades should I do so i don't double back and find I have to do more work later.

Just move the battery. You will need bigger cable because of the increased length. Also you could connect the battery earth to a convenient spot in the boot area. The +ve will have to be fixed under the floor pan running back to the engine bay. Steer clear of the fuel lines and run it inside a conduit. Do not run the +ve inside of the cabin because if there is a short etc. the cabin will fill with smoke and carpet/plastic will catch fire immediately.

Out of curiosity is there negatives of putting your battery in the boot? Because it has crossed my mind aswell.

Well if it was going in the boot of mine it would be hidden behind the custom boot install anyway.. so on the unfortunate side I wouldn't be able to show it off.

Should be no negatives, just a tidier engine bay. So you think under the cabin is the way? Not through the door trim and through the firewall instead?? I was thinking 0AWG from the alternator to the battery in the boot then 0 gauge to a dist block then off to my two amps.. Only the amps and the sub in a custom box will be on display unless I get a really good battery. In that case I might show it off. My worry however is the fuse box. I don't really want it on display, but i rather have it on display then have to rewire it completely...

i think it would better to have a 2ed battery in the boot so you if the one goes dead in the boot you can still start you car. that just me cause i think a car kinder look a bit different with out it under the bonnet

But would you be able to get the alternator to charge the two batteries? Or am I looking at getting an after market alternator as well?

Losts of 4WD's have dual batteries. You will need a inteface thingy and it will work great. Have a search on some 4WD websites and search for dual battery systems for some more info.

You run the power to the Starter Motor, then a power wire from the Starter Motor to the Alternator, you also have to run one of the the two wires that go to the Alternator, one is white, the other brown. One is the power signal wire i think, and one is to illuminite the battery light in the dash cluster. The power signal wire also run to the starter to get its power from. I think this wire comes with a inline fusible wire, so don't get rid of this.

I put my battery where the spare wheel used to live. I ran my power cable through the a hole in the rear firewall and down the rear wheel tub, then underneath the corner of the carpet and the door sil. The cable lays and flows through the interior so nicely it was almost like it was ment to lay there. You can run your cable underneath the car but you'll have to run in conduit and have straddles pretty much every 150mm. I then ran it through the the front left hand kick panel and then underneath the carpet. I drilled through the front firewall close to the chassis rail and put a rubber grommet, then i ran the cable though the kframe, keeping in mind to keep clear of any moving parts(the turning of the steering rack, the suspension, etc). I then rapt the cable neatly with electrical tape and connected it up to the starter.

It's a fun task getting to the bolt on the starter, you'll need stubbie spanners to do it.

You have to install the battery in the boot on the oppisite side of the fuel filler.
Plus its always easier to install it on the same side of the Starter Motor.

I'm relocating my Alternator to where my Air Conditioner pump used to live on my ecotec, so the alternator will then be right next to the starter motor. Much Neater.
