Default Removing ballancer after bolt removal

Im guessing there's either a tool or a trick to it, i removed the bolt with the starter motor breaker bar trick but now to pull the dam thing off, mines the original one to.

You will need a gear puller to get it off. There is no way it is coming off without one.

yep, you will need a puller to get it off. you should be able to get one at any auto parts store like supercheap, autobarn etc... you will need to torque the bolt back up to 275-320nm. it definetly wont just do itself back up.

Supercheap had the large gear pullers for $75 but I'm sure I paid much less for mine, but unfortunately I lent it to someone on these forums and never got it back. That will teach me to help people.

I'm in Toowoomba and can lend you one or if you're close by I can drop it off - pm me your email address. Also have the correct threaded bolts. Might be best to pm your phone number instead of email address to save me asking tomorrow.

I doubt holden would have one. They want you to pay them to fix your car - not DIY.

Drop into supercrap and get a "harmonic balancer puller". You don't need a full set, just the ducks-foot part and the centre bolt. Then drop into a bolt/engineering shop and get three 1/4" UNF bolts. Should get change from $30.

See if you can get an old screwdriver in there and get a hammer and hit this thing with it to see if it moves at all.It looks like the balancer is stuffed anyway so it wont hurt anything.

I had exactly the same problem using bolt grip pullers to pull one off a car at pick-a-part last week. You really need to be using a claw puller for this, bolt grip is useless if there is not a proper thread for the bolts to grip.

thanks brett and andrew, i tried with a screw driver in the other holes but there's nothing to grip onto it's flat, when i put it in the problem hole i can move the ballancer and you can see the crack close up, so it's because it's cracked it's moved, dont know why they'd put the damn thing so close to the hole.

Anyway ill goto supercheap or repco tomorrow and hopefully they have a claw type one that's big enough. Failing that ill hack the rubber off on this one and see if there's something in there i can leaver on so i can move it to get the screw it in.

The claw type is the one I was referring to earlier, $75 at Supercheap for the large one, which is one you will need.

As I said before get an old screwdriver and a hammer, and try to hammer the piece thats blocking the hole, around out of the way.It must must move,it wouldnt have been like that from new,its probably moved over the hole as its slowly worn out.So try bashing it around (not to hard though) and see if it does move at all.

$75 is probably around what it would cost a mechanic to replace it so if it's in road service just get it towed somewhere to get it fixed.
Or if it's rubber blocking off the screw thread you could try a small chisel abd hammer to cut the rubber bit out that's in the way.

yeh i tried to but it springs back, it's a chunk of metal, i can leaver it and the rubber where the crack is closes up, but trying to hold it there while i get the bolt in is another thing, i tried putting the belt back on and getting it to hold tention but it still wasn't enough, ive spent a few hours now on it and a bit of cursing so ill get a claw puller tomorrow and get the damn thing off.

Yesterday i redid my intake gaskets and seals, changed pullys and link pin rubbers on the back, oil and coolant and spent more time buggern around with this damn thing today than to do all that yesterday lol.

arh well it'd be handy for me to have a claw puller on hand for other jobs, never know when you need one

good stuff, another way i got mine off my old vn was just hit it with a hammer (not smack the **** out of it)on the side of it where the belt goes. it didnt actually have the holes to put the puller in so that was the only way,and it slowly came off

Hey guys, im going to change a VR harmonic balancer on a mates car today. Anything to know about the CAS or how to fit the new seal? Do I have to touch the CAS or will i just pull the old balancer off, and push the new one on, stick new seal on and tighten bolt to 275? grease the new seal? any help would be awesome... i've got a rattle gun and bolt on type gear puller.... cheers!
