I've got a VS SS with a rebuilt engine, crow cam and valve springs the engine has done about 20,000km and ever since i got it back it has used oil and water, the drivers side spark plugs have clogged up a few times and dropped it back to 7cyl.
Taking it back to the people who built the motor really isn't an option...I would rather pay money for someone to do the job right than send it back to a bunch of apprentices who will likely bodge it up to get rid of me.
In talking with the boys/mechanics along the way we have basically assumed that the problem either lies with the intake manifold/gasket or the heads/gaskets and judging from the bubbling thats coming from the radiator with the lid off and motor running these days im starting to lean towards a head problem...possibly wasn't tensioned properly...or the gasket moved when it was going together, i would say unlikely that the head is cracked, it never overheats and there is no water in the oil or vice versa.
So...mah choice would be rip the rockers, intake, heads off myself, and just redo the gaskets and hope it fixes it... But im considering sending it to the professionals for a port and polish and new gaskets throughout obviously...Anyone know someone in adelaide they would recommend?
There's every possibility that once the lid comes off more problems will surface, so I really want a mechanic who knows what they're doing.
Once i get the oil/water usage problem sorted i can get the thing dynotuned and hopefully get a decent figure, sick and tired of my backyard tune that pings on 91 octane and only runs right on 98....
Get a compression test done on the engine and get the cooling system pressure tested as well. This will tell you the condition of the engine and if any gaskets etc are blown or leaking.
May be valve related, fouling of the spark plugs generally a result of prob in ignition system somewhere also bubbling with the radiator in my experiences it was blocked redid entire cooling system myself Presto fixed.
Pinging motor hmmmm would of thought from 98 as you need greater capacity to ignite so you would slighlty advance timing as for 91 Most vehicles these days run on reg unleaded.

Actually i did compression test it, had reasonable numbers on all cyclinders except for number 4 cyl which was less than 100, dialled down the compressor and fitted a thingy in the spark plug hole, put 100psi through it and it came out the exhaust. Cracked/broken/burned out exhaust valve anyone?
Burned valve or valve seat. Was that particular cylinder set to top dead centre on compression stroke when you did this test with the compressed air?
Nope, i turned it over though without change.
Tbh, i was a bit freaked about pushing compressed air into mah cylinder but my mate had done it before with a similar problem, and assured me the psi was dialled right down so as not to do damage.
Yeah the compressed air cant really hurt anything at that pressure. The cylinder has to be at or near (Top Dead Centre)TDC on the compression stroke, otherwise the valves will be open(probably the exhaust valve in your case). The easiest way to find TDC is to hold your finger over the sparkplug hole (tightly) and get someone to wind over the engine (by hand, with a spanner or socket on the balancer bolt in the direction it normally turns over) until you feel pressure trying to push past your finger. That will be the compression stroke. Then try the compressed air thing. If you wind the engine over too far,the exhaust valve will be opening again, and you will have to do the finger over the sparkplug hole thing again to find the compression stroke again.
To be honest, im looking to replace the heads anyway, I've already rebuilt the bottom end and left the heads stock except for valve springs that match the cam. I'm still in the process of trying to get some prices and stuff to work out what the best way to go is. But I'd like to replace the extractors, heads and maybe add some roller rockers at the same time. Kind of want the inlet manifold port matched to the heads or something too, which will mean taking it to the pro's. Also wouldn't mind if the heads i replace mine with are an improvement in power over stock...
I dont want to spend like 1500-1700 on heads like the yella terra ones...but I also dont want some cheap chinese ripoff or something...like i said...im still in planning mode atm.
Replacing the extractors coz one of them has a bit of a crack in it, and replacing the extractors while the heads are off the motor has gotta be the best time to do it lol
