it will run with no oil the oil sender is just a backup for fuel supply for limp home mode when the ecu cant turn the pump on or if the relay dies

Check the starter motor electrical connections etc.Ticking sound is usually a sign of a flat battery.Try jump starting it.The battery might have power but not enough to turn the engine over. The ECU needs the battery voltage to be above a certain level to work too.

This may sound odd, but find a light hammer, or heavy spanner or something, and try giving the starter motor and solenoid a few taps?

Has worked in the past for me on various cars with similar symptoms.. lol

It might be a faulty "start" relay near the fuses under the bonnet. Swap it with the horn relay then see if it starts then.

I'm not sure that is correct - the engine should not run with no oil pressure and should not start with no oil or at least that's the way I understand it....but I may be wrong. Attached is what the Gregory manual says.vr oil sensor-opswitch..jpg

I know they wont start if the oil pressure switch gets full of water after an engine wash.
Put the switch in the oven to dry it out. Even then it may not work. Had to occasionally replace the switch.
