Hi
well i did the v8 tacho conversion as shown somewhere on JC and it states to use a 220k resistor which i did and im 99% sure that my tacho is under reading as the tacho doesnt read much over 3k at pretty much full throttle
has anyone got a clear picture of a v8 tacho so that I could get the resistor colours/positions from it
thanks
Have I got a L3 V6 or V8 Tacho
A link to some photos.
I just purchased 20 of the 220k resistors (second round of making V8 tachos) and all 5 of them failed to work. Now when I was at Dick Smiths to buy them the lad asked me if I wated .5 or 2. I had no idea what he ment so I got 2's. Now I'm thinking it should hve been .5. So I'm going back tonight to get the others and see if that makes the tacho's work. The first batch of 5 I made all worked......

How to convert a V6 tacho to suit a V8

That is the tolerance of the resister. The 220k resister with the 2 percent tolerance has the colours red, red, yellow, red.
The 220k resister with a 5 percent tolerance has the colours red, red, yellow, gold.
Resisters are available in 1,2,3,4,5,10,20 percent tolerances.Theres probably more but they arent very common.
Im fairly sure the code is standard worldwide.Ive got a program that lets you enter the colours and it will tell you what specifications that resister is.You can also enter the resister's number(eg-220k) and it tells you the colours that should be on that resister.Theres no mention of there being different codes for different parts of the world in this program either. This is for the 4th colour band on the resister.Brown = 1% tolerance.Red =2% tolerance.Orange = 3% tolerance.Yellow = 4% tolerance.Gold = 5% tolerance.Silver = 10% tolerance. No band = 20% tolerance.
It says that theres hardly any circuits designed or used that require a specific resister tolerance,so even if the ones you got are different in their tolerance. It would be unlikely the circuit would require a specific tolerance anyway, just as long as they are the same ohms.

OK I think I may have found them. I've fitted 5 to tachos and will test after tea. If they work I'll post some photos if I can get the camera to take close ups.

OK got 1 to work last night (the other 4 tachos may well have been killed in action by me)
The resistor is red red yellow brown.
The photo of the tacho is an original V8 tacho resistor.

Red,Red,Yellow,Brown is a 220k resister with a 1% tolerance. What colours are on the strip of new ones in the pic?
Thats odd as i tried mine yesterday with exactly the same resistor (220k with 1% tolerance) an it was still wrong
Picked up a VP senator dash with busted LCDS today so gonna have a play with that.
Can i swap the Plastic circuit boards over from mine (came from VS) or shud I just raid the tacho and stuff and put them in mine?
